Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Household

The master suite on the third floor of the Marlowe mansion was a sanctuary of dark mahogany, heavy velvet drapes, and the soft crackle of a limestone fireplace. It was a space no maid had ever entered while Vincent was present; even his personal staff cleaned it under the strict supervision of armed guards.
Now, Nora stood in the center of the bathroom, washing her bloody hands in a bowl of warm water while Vincent sat shirtless on the edge of the marble counter.
His torso was a map of violent history. Broad-shouldered and thick-chested, his pale skin was marred by several old bullet scars, a long, jagged knife wound that ran from his left collarbone to his floating ribs, and the fresh, bleeding furrow on his shoulder.
Nora opened the sterile medical kit Samuel had rushed up from the basement. Her movements were smooth, robotic, honed by thousands of hours in overcrowded city emergency rooms.
"This is going to sting," she warned, picking up a bottle of iodine and a curved suture needle threaded with braided silk. "I don't have local anesthetic up here. I can send Samuel down to get lidocaine—"
"Just sew it, Nora," Vincent commanded, his voice tight. He gripped the edge of the marble counter with both hands, his knuckles turning white. "I've had worse than this from dull bayonets."
Nora cleaned the wound with swift, uncompromising strokes. Vincent didn't flinch, but she saw the muscles in his jaw ripple, a thin sheen of sweat breaking across his brow.
She leaned in close. Her breath was warm against his neck as she pushed the needle through the torn skin, tying off the first knot with surgeon’s precision.
"Why didn't you let Marco drive you to a hospital?" Nora asked quietly, snipping the thread. "You could have bled out if that round had hit two inches to the right."
"Marlowes don't go to hospitals," Vincent said through gritted teeth. "Dominic Vance has paid off half the trauma staff on the West Side. If I walked into an ER with a gunshot wound, a dirty orderly would slip potassium chloride into my IV before the doctor could scrub his hands."
Nora’s hands paused for half a second before continuing. "That’s what happened to my career, you know. Corruption. Everyone thinks medicine is clean. It’s just as dirty as your syndicate, Vincent. Just with whiter coats and better lawyers."
"Then you understand why I trust you," Vincent murmured.
She tied off the fifth suture, her fingers brushing against the hot skin of his chest. "You shouldn't trust me. My father almost got you killed today."
"Your father didn't send that hit squad," Vincent countered, his eyes locking onto hers as she applied sterile gauze over the wound. "Tyler Kane sent them. We pulled the drive from your father’s Buick. Marco brought it in twenty minutes ago. It contains the surveillance logs from Vance’s front companies. And Tyler’s signature is on every wire transfer."
Nora secured the medical tape with a gentle pat. "What did you do to Tyler?"
Vincent’s gaze remained unwavering. "He’s in the wine cellar. Tied to a chair. Samuel is waiting for my orders."
Nora stepped back, untying her latex gloves and tossing them into the wastebasket. She looked at him—half-naked, bleeding, powerful, and terrifying—sitting in his luxurious palace while a young man waited in the dark below to die.
"Don't do it," she said softly.
Vincent’s eyebrows drew together. "What?"
"Don't execute him in cold blood," Nora pleaded, her voice thick with emotion. "I know he betrayed you. I know he insulted me, and I know he tried to get my father killed. But if you execute him in your basement, Vincent, you're no better than Dominic Vance. You're just another killer in an expensive suit."
Vincent slowly stood up from the counter. He towered over her, his bare chest glistening in the soft light of the bathroom, the fresh bandage stark white against his tanned, scarred skin. He stepped into her personal space until the tips of their shoes touched.
"You think mercy makes a man good, Nora?" he asked, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that resonated deep in her bones. "Mercy in my world is an invitation to be slaughtered. If I spare Tyler, Vance will see it as weakness. My own captains will question whether I have lost my stomach for blood. Within a month, there would be a mutiny, and you, your father, and every man who works for me would end up in a ditch."
"And what about your soul, Vincent?" she whispered, looking up into his haunted gray eyes. "Is there anything left in there that hasn't been turned to iron?"
Vincent reached out, his large, calloused hand cupping the side of her face. His thumb brushed over her cheekbone, tender and deliberate.
"I thought there wasn't," he admitted, his voice rough with an emotion he couldn't control. "I thought my father had burned everything soft out of me twenty years ago. Then you sprinted across a ballroom in a cheap gray uniform and put your life between my gun and a traitor."
He leaned down, his face closing the distance until his lips were a breath away from hers. Nora’s pulse hammered wildly in her throat. She should have stepped back. She should have remembered who he was. But the raw, unmasked vulnerability in his eyes held her completely captive.
"You are the only thing in this house that isn't made of stone, Nora," Vincent whispered against her lips. "And I would burn this entire city to the ground before I let anyone extinguish you."
Before she could answer, the door to the bedroom banged open.
"Boss!" Samuel’s voice echoed down the hall, panicked and urgent. "Boss, you need to get down to the cellar right now!"
Vincent stepped back immediately, the cold, lethal armor snapping back over his features. He grabbed a fresh black dress shirt from the chair, pulling it on over his bandaged shoulder without wincing.
"What happened?" Vincent demanded, stepping into the bedroom.

Samuel stood in the doorway, his gun drawn, his face covered in sweat. "It’s Tyler. Vance’s men breached the rear service gate three minutes ago. They aren't trying to rescue Tyler, Boss... they're trying to burn the mansion down!"
