Chapter 6 - The Betrayal Within

Their lips met with the explosive force of two colliding storms.

It wasn't gentle. It wasn't polite.

Vincent pulled her against him, groaning as the strain pulled at his freshly stitched wound, but he didn't care. His mouth was fierce, demanding, tasting of scotch, adrenaline, and raw hunger.

Beatrice let the suture needle drop onto the stainless tray with a sharp clatter. Her hands sank into his thick, dark hair, pulling him closer, her body pressing against his bare chest. She felt the heavy heat of him, the hard contours of his muscle against the soft, unyielding curves of her body.

For the first time in her life, Beatrice Gallagher didn't feel self-conscious about her weight, her size, or the space she occupied.

Vincent held her as if she were gold, his hands gripping her waist, pulling her flush against him, worshiping every curve with a desperate, reverent fervor that left her dizzy.

When they finally broke apart, both of them were gasping for air.

Vincent’s forehead rested against hers, his eyes dark, heavy, and dilated with an emotion that terrified Beatrice far more than any loaded gun.

Before either of them could speak, the secure satellite phone on the examination table began to vibrate violently.

The harsh, mechanical buzzing shattered the moment like cold water.

Beatrice stepped back, smoothing down her ruined emerald dress, her chest heaving as she fought to regain her professional composure.

Vincent took a slow, steadying breath, closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, and reached for the phone. The warmth and vulnerability that had softened his features vanished instantly, replaced once more by the cold, calculating mask of the Don.

“Speak,” Vincent commanded.

The voice on the other end was frantic, tinny, and muffled by static. “Boss, it’s Richard. The Indiana safehouse where we were holding the brother... it was hit.”

Vincent’s eyes snapped to Beatrice.

Beatrice’s blood turned to ice. “Tommy?” she mouthed silently.

“Casualties?” Vincent barked into the phone.

“Two of our guards are down,” Richard reported grimly. “The brother is gone. But boss... it wasn't the Morettis. We pulled security footage from the perimeter cameras before the power lines were cut. The strike team was driving vehicles registered to our own logistics depot at Calumet Harbor.”

Vincent’s jaw locked. “Marco.”

“Yes, boss. Marco Varga. He cleared out the harbor offices an hour ago and took three million in cash from the transit vaults. He’s got the brother.”

Vincent ended the call without another word. He stood up from the examination table, ignoring the fresh blood seeping through the new sutures along his ribcage.

Beatrice’s mind was spinning at light speed. “Marco didn't work with Salvatore,” she said, her voice sharp and rapid. “Marco *used* Salvatore. Salvatore was the loud, arrogant distraction. Marco was the one actually orchestrating the collapse.”

“And now he has Tommy,” Vincent said coldly, reaching for a fresh black dress shirt from the safehouse supply closet.

“Why?” Beatrice asked, pacing across the concrete floor. “Why take Tommy? Tommy doesn't have the money. He doesn't have the codes anymore. He’s completely useless to Marco.”

Vincent slipped his arms into the sleeves of the shirt, buttoning it with steady, lethal precision. “Tommy isn't useless, Beatrice. Tommy is leverage.”

Right on cue, Beatrice’s personal mobile phone—which had been left on the safehouse desk—lit up with an incoming video call from an unlisted number.

Beatrice looked at Vincent. Vincent nodded once, stepping silently behind her, just out of frame of the front-facing camera.

She answered the call.

The screen flickered, revealing the interior of a dimly lit industrial grain silo.

In the center of the frame, tied to a rusted steel chair, was Tommy. His face was battered, blood streaming from his nose, his shirt torn to shreds.

Behind him stood Marco Varga, holding a sawed-off shotgun casually across his shoulder.

“Hello, Miss Gallagher,” Marco said, his voice greasy and mocking. “I hope you’re enjoying your evening with the boss. He’s very generous with his time, isn't he?”

“Marco,” Beatrice said, her voice dropping into an icy, venomous register that made the mobster’s smirk waver for half a second. “If you put a single scratch on my brother that wasn't already there, I will personally ensure that every financial institution in the Western Hemisphere freezes your stolen cash before you can buy a single gallon of gas.”

Marco laughed, but it was a nervous, high-pitched sound. “You talk big for an accountant, sweetheart. But you’re not dealing with spreadsheets anymore. Here’s the deal: Vincent’s master ledger. The private cryptographic cold-storage key he keeps in the safe behind the library wall. You bring it to the Calumet Grain Silo 4 by dawn. Just you. No Richard, no strike teams, no wiretaps.”

“And if I don't?”

Marco grabbed Tommy by the hair, yanking his head backward until the younger man shrieked in agony.

“Then your brother takes a swim in Lake Michigan with thirty pounds of concrete chained to his ankles,” Marco snarled. “Dawn, Beatrice. Don't be late.”

The screen went black.

Beatrice stood completely still, staring at her phone. Her knuckles were white.

“You can’t give him that key,” she said quietly, without turning around. “That key contains the sovereign identities and bank routing numbers for your entire network. If Marco gets that, he doesn't just run—he sells it to the federal government for complete immunity, and your entire empire falls within forty-eight hours.”

Vincent walked up behind her. He didn't touch her, but his presence was a wall of absolute, terrifying warmth.

“I don't give a damn about the key, Beatrice,” Vincent said softly.

She turned to face him, her eyes wide with shock. “What?”

“The key can be rewritten. The servers can be wiped. The money can be remade,” Vincent said, his dark eyes locked onto hers with an intensity that took her breath away. “Marco made a fatal mistake tonight. He thought he was kidnapping your brother to force my surrender.”

Vincent reached out, his hand cupping the side of her face, his thumb brushing her trembling lip.

“He doesn't realize that by threatening you, he has made himself the single most hunted creature on the continent of North America. We are going to that silo. We are going to get your brother. And then I am going to tear Marco Varga apart with my bare hands.”
