Chapter 7 - The Fall of the Valente Dynasty

At two o'clock that afternoon, an emergency assembly of the Commission of the Five Families was convened in the neutral territory of the Grand Ballroom of the Harvard Club on 44th Street.
Don Salvatore Valente sat in the center of the mahogany dais, flanked by twelve elder dons from the East Coast syndicates.
The room was dead silent, smelling of aged leather, cold cigar ash, and the heavy, electric tension of an empire on the brink of civil war.
The heavy double doors of the ballroom were thrown open with a concussive, deafening crash.
Two Caster security operators entered, dragging Dante Valente between them. The young capo was wrapped in sterile hospital bandages from his knee to his thigh, handcuffed with heavy steel restraints, his ivory dinner jacket shredded and covered in diesel soot. They dropped him onto his knees in the center of the parquet floor, right before his father’s feet.
And walking through the threshold behind him, side by side, were Roman Caster and Khloe Hayes.
They were magnificent.
Roman wore a fresh bespoke charcoal suit, his broad shoulders squared, radiating the cold, unyielding power of an executioner who had already won the war.
Beside him walked Khloe, wearing a tailored navy silk wrap dress that hugged her curves with regal elegance, her dark hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders, the six-carat Caster diamond ring blazing on her left hand like an unquenchable star.
The twelve dons rose to their feet as one man.
Don Salvatore stared at his shattered, weeping son on the floor, then lifted his rheumy, terrified eyes to Roman.
"Roman..." Salvatore stammered, his aristocratic voice cracking. "What is the meaning of this? This is an unscheduled tribunal!"
"This is not a tribunal, Salvatore," Roman replied, his baritone cutting through the vast room like a scythe.
He didn't look at the other dons. He looked down at Dante.
"At eight-thirty this morning, your son orchestrated an armed ambush on Pier Twelve. He detonated three commercial fuel storage tanks, killed two dockworkers, and attempted to assassinate my betrothed."
A collective, horrified murmur swept through the twelve family heads. An attack on a civilian terminal was a catastrophic breach of the syndicate charter; an attack on the betrothed of a family boss was a capital offense carrying summary liquidation.
Khloe stepped forward, pulling a thin leather portfolio from under her arm and dropping it onto the center of the dais with a sharp thwack.
"Inside that portfolio," Khloe spoke, her voice clear, resonant, and carrying effortlessly across the silent room, "are the digital surveillance recordings from the port towers showing Mr. Dante Valente directing the attack."
She leaned forward, her amber eyes burning with absolute, fearless triumph.
"Along with the forensic financial audits proving that for the past eighteen months, Don Salvatore Valente has been siphoning forty percent of the Commission’s joint customs revenue into private shell accounts in Panama."
Don Salvatore went ashen. He grabbed the edges of the mahogany desk, his breath coming in shallow, wheezing gasps as the other eleven dons turned toward him with expressions of cold, murderous betrayal.
"You stole from the Commission, Salvatore?" Don Moretti of Philadelphia growled, his hand disappearing inside his coat.
"Under Article Nine of the Charter," Roman announced, stepping up to Khloe’s side, resting his hand possessively on her shoulder, "the Valente family has forfeited its seat on the council, its shipping rights in the North Harbor, and all territorial claims on the Eastern Seaboard."
He looked at the eleven surviving bosses.
"Does any man in this room contest the execution of Article Nine?"
Not a single don spoke.
One by one, the eleven crime bosses lowered their heads, bowing slightly toward Roman and Khloe in an unprecedented, unanimous gesture of complete, unconditional submission.
"The territory is yours, Don Caster," Don Moretti announced solemnly.
Roman did not look back at Salvatore or his weeping son.
He turned to Khloe, offered her his arm with an infinite, tender reverence that completely silenced the room, and walked out of the Harvard Club into the bright afternoon sunlight.
