Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Blood

By noon the following day, the digital world had erupted.
Nora woke in a king-sized bed covered in Egyptian cotton, the scent of lavender and fresh linen disorienting her after years of sleeping on a saggy mattress in Pilsen. On the bedside table lay a new iPhone, fully encrypted, alongside a change of clothes—tailored black trousers and an ivory silk blouse that fit her perfectly.
She picked up the phone. A notification from a national news outlet immediately dominated the screen:
**"CHAOS AT ALVISE: MYSTERY HERO SAVES BILLIONAIRE HEIRESS CLAIRE MERCER FROM SUDDEN COLLAPSE."**
Nora tapped the link. A viral TikTok video, recorded by a diner two tables away from Julian’s party the night before, had already garnered fourteen million views.
The video was clear as crystal. It showed Nora dropping her serving tray, seizing command of the room, shouting down Julian’s armed enforcers, and diagnosing Claire’s stroke in ten seconds flat. The comments were an avalanche of speculation:
*“Who is this waitress?! She handled Julian Mercer like he was a child!”*
*“Look at her hands—she’s checking the NIH stroke scale! That’s not a waitress, that’s a surgeon!”*
*“Wait... is that Nora Bennett? The doctor from the Chicago General scandal three years ago??”*
Nora’s breath seized. The internet had already connected the dots. If the public knew, Harrison Vance knew.
She rushed down the grand spiral staircase to the ground floor. She found Julian in the sunroom, surrounded by monitors displaying live financial tickers and security feeds. Claire was sitting on a chaise lounge, working through cognitive exercises with a tablet, looking remarkably vibrant.
"Julian," Nora said, holding up the phone. "This video is everywhere."
Julian didn't look up from his laptop. "I know. It hit Twitter at four this morning. Marcus traced the original upload to an influencer at the corner booth."
"You don't understand," Nora said, her voice rising with urgent tension. "Vance will see this. He’s going to realize I’m with you. He’ll know we’re looking into Claire’s collapse!"
Julian finally closed his laptop and looked at her. His gaze drifted from her face down the length of the ivory blouse, taking in her transformed appearance with deliberate, lingering appreciation.
"That was the plan, Nora," Julian said calmly.
Nora stopped dead. "What?"
"If Vance thought you were still scrubbing floors in Pilsen, he would have ignored you until he found a quiet alley to stage your overdose," Julian explained, his voice chillingly analytical. "Now, he knows you are alive, you are recognized, and you are under my roof. A cornered predator acts recklessly. When men act recklessly, they leave paper trails."
"You used me as bait?!" Nora’s anger flared, her eyes flashing silver-grey. She took three aggressive steps toward his desk. "Without telling me? You put my face across the entire country!"
Julian stood up, matching her intensity. He didn't back down an inch; instead, he closed the distance between them until Nora could feel the radiant heat of his fury.
"I didn't upload the video, Nora. But I refused to pay two million dollars to take it down because it gives you the ultimate shield," Julian growled softly. "Every eye in Chicago is watching you now. If a single hair on your head is harmed, Harrison Vance and the Morettis become the prime suspects in a federal investigation. In my world, darkness kills. Sunlight protects."
"Julian is right, Nora," Claire chimed in softly from the couch, her speech clear and deliberate. "Look at what Vance just released five minutes ago."
Claire turned her tablet around.
Dr. Harrison Vance had issued a public press release through the Chicago General PR department:
*“We are deeply concerned by reports circulating online regarding former resident Nora Bennett. Miss Bennett was dismissed from our surgical program following catastrophic negligence that resulted in the loss of a minor. We urge the Mercer family to seek certified, licensed medical professionals for Miss Mercer’s ongoing care, rather than relying on an emotionally unstable individual with revoked credentials.”*
Nora gripped the edge of Julian’s desk, her knuckles turning white. The smear was vicious, timed perfectly to destroy any credibility she had gained from the viral video.
"He’s panicking," Julian whispered, his hand gently covering hers where she gripped the desk. The contact was shocking in its warmth, sending an unexpected shiver through her spine. "He’s trying to discredit you before you examine Claire’s full clinical records."
"There are no full records," Nora said through gritted teeth. "He had them expunged."
"Expunged from Chicago General’s servers, yes," Julian said, a lethal smile touching his lips. "But Harrison Vance is arrogant. He keeps private backups of all his off-the-books research at his private residence in Lake Forest. Tonight, there is a fundraising gala for the Vance Biomedical Foundation at the Drake Hotel. Vance will be there. The Morettis will be there."
Nora looked at him, realizing the madness of his plan. "And what are you going to do?"

"We are going to attend," Julian said. "You and I. Arm in arm."
