Chapter 6 - SHADOWS AT THE HOSPITAL

The private medical pavilion of St. Jude’s in Lincoln Park was a discreet, high-end facility catering to Chicago’s elite. It was clean, quiet, and guarded by private security rather than city police.

Within twenty minutes of Marco’s report, Luca, Marco, and I were walking through the underground service entrance of the hospital. Luca had ordered Emily and Michael to remain locked down within the fortified safe-room of the estate under the protection of eight armed guards.

"Why would Vanessa go after records?" I asked as we moved swiftly down the sterile white corridor, the smell of antiseptic burning my nostrils. "The Commission stripped her family of everything. What good are medical files to her?"

"Leverage," Luca answered, his voice tight with fury. "Or venom. A cornered snake doesn't bite to feed, Claire. It bites to kill before it dies. If Vanessa can't have my empire, she will try to ensure Emily never holds that child."

We reached the third floor—the obstetrics and neonatal wing. The hallway was hushed, carpeted in pale blue, with framed watercolor paintings of landscapes lining the walls. At the central nursing station, a middle-aged nurse was typing into a computer terminal.

Luca approached the counter with smooth, commanding authority. "Where is Dr. Rossi?"

The nurse looked up, startled by Luca’s imposing presence. "Dr. Rossi is in surgery on the fourth floor, sir. Who are you?"

"I am Luca Moretti. My daughter’s prenatal files were routed here this morning."

The nurse blinked, adjusting her glasses. "Moretti? Oh... yes. Another nurse came by fifteen minutes ago to retrieve the physical charts for transport to Dr. Rossi’s surgical suite."

My stomach dropped like a lead weight.

"Another nurse?" I asked, stepping up to the desk. "What did she look like?"

"Tall, very slender... dark hair pulled back in a surgical cap," the nurse replied, frowning slightly. "She was wearing the green pediatric scrubs. She said she was Dr. Rossi’s new surgical assistant."

"Did she have a badge?" Luca’s voice was dangerously low.

"Well... yes, she had a visitor lanyard, but—"

"Show me where the pharmaceutical dispensary is," Luca interrupted, his hand dropping beneath his coat toward his holster. "Now."

The nurse went pale, sensing the immediate, deadly peril in the air. "Room 304... at the end of the hall. But you can't go in there without authorized keycard access!"

Luca didn't wait for a keycard. He covered the length of the carpeted hallway in four long strides, Marco and me trailing right behind him.

The door to Room 304 was closed, a small frosted glass window set into the upper panel. Luca peered through the glass, his jaw tightening instantly.

Inside, standing beside a refrigerated glass cabinet filled with vials of injectable medication, was a woman dressed in surgical scrubs. But beneath the loose fabric, her movements were frantic, jerky, and unmistakably patrician.

It was Vanessa.

She had an open cooler bag on the stainless-steel counter. She was holding a pre-filled syringe, drawing fluid from a small ampoule marked *Oxytocin*—a powerful medication used to induce intense uterine contractions. Next to it sat Emily’s medical file, stolen from the records office, detailing Emily’s specific room number and scheduled delivery medications.

Vanessa wasn't just stealing files. She was planning to poison Emily’s prescribed supplements at the estate.

Luca kicked the heavy oak door open with a thunderous splinter of wood.

Vanessa shrieked, dropping the glass ampoule onto the tile floor where it shattered into a hundred sparkling shards. She spun around, backing against the cold steel cabinets, her hands trembling violently. The surgical mask slipped down her chin, revealing her sunken, manic eyes and smudged mascara.

"Luca!" she gasped, her voice cracking with hysterics. "Stay back! Don't come near me!"

Luca stepped into the room, his eyes scanning the shattered glass, the syringe in her hand, and the stolen file on the counter. His expression was not one of rage; it was one of utter, sickening disgust.

"You came into a hospital to poison an unborn child," Luca whispered. The silence that followed his words was more terrifying than a gunshot. "A baby, Vanessa."

"It’s not a baby! It’s a curse!" Vanessa screamed, losing every shred of sanity. She waved the needle toward him like a dagger. "Everything was perfect! We had the wedding planned! My family was going to rule this city! And then that miserable little girl walks in with her rounded belly, and you throw me into the street like trash!"

"You threw yourself into the street the day your father murdered my wife," Luca said, stepping forward without a hint of fear.

"I didn't kill Elena!" Vanessa sobbed, tears cutting tracks through her makeup. "I was twenty years old! What was I supposed to do? Tell you and watch my father get executed? I tried to love you, Luca! I gave you three years of my youth!"

"You gave me calculated poison," Luca said, stopping two feet away from the trembling needle. He didn't flinch. "Drop the syringe."

"No!" she shrieked, lunging toward him, aiming the steel needle directly at his neck.

Luca didn't even draw his weapon. With a lightning-fast movement of his left forearm, he parried her strike, twisting her wrist with clinical precision until the syringe clattered harmlessly against the floor. He gripped her by the shoulders, slamming her backward against the steel refrigeration unit with a heavy, reverberating boom.

"You're done, Vanessa," Luca growled into her face. "The Commission banished you. But you broke the terms. You entered my territory, you targeted my family, and you signed your own warrant."

"You can't kill me in a hospital!" Vanessa gasped, clawing at his wrists. "People will see! The police—"

"The police don't run Chicago," Marco’s voice cut in from the doorway, his gun drawn and lowered, guarding the corridor. "And nobody sees what happens to a ghost."

Luca looked over his shoulder at me.

"Claire," Luca said quietly. "Take the file."

I stepped forward, my hands surprisingly steady, and picked up Emily’s stolen medical folder from the counter. I looked at Vanessa—the woman who, just twenty-four hours ago, had treated me like dirt beneath her designer heels, who had ordered me to discard a pregnant girl in the freezing rain.

Vanessa looked at me, her eyes filled with desperate, humiliating defeat. "Claire... please. Tell him. You're a woman... you understand... tell him not to do this..."

"I understand that you tried to murder a mother and her child," I said, holding the file against my chest. "You don't deserve mercy, Mrs. Bellini. You deserve exactly what you built."

Luca looked at Marco. "Take her to the secondary holding site at the docks. Don't touch her. Let her sit in the dark until the Commission ratifies the final execution order tomorrow morning."

"Understood, Boss," Marco said, stepping forward with zip-ties.

As Marco dragged Vanessa out through the service exit, her muffled screams fading into the labyrinth of the hospital basement, Luca stood alone in the dispensary. He looked down at the shattered glass on the floor, running a hand over his face. The exhaustion of the last thirty-six hours was finally showing in the lines around his eyes.

"Are you all right, sir?" I asked softly, stepping closer.

Luca lowered his hand, turning his dark eyes toward me. A faint, tired smile touched his mouth.

"I have spent thirty years living in blood, Claire," he murmured. "I thought I was immune to the ugliness of it. But seeing her standing there with that syringe... ready to extinguish the only piece of Elena I have left in this world..."

He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently resting against the side of my neck, his thumb brushing my jawline with an tenderness that made my pulse flutter wildly.

"If you hadn't brought Emily through those doors last night," Luca said softly, his voice trembling with profound sincerity, "my daughter would be dead, my grandson would be gone, and I would be married to a monster. How do I ever thank you for saving my soul?"

I looked into his eyes—eyes that held a lifetime of pain, power, and unspoken loneliness.

"Just keep them safe, Luca," I whispered, using his first name for the very first time.

Luca’s breath hitched slightly at the sound of his name on my lips. He didn't pull his hand away. For three long seconds, in that cold, sterile hospital room surrounded by shattered glass, the distance between the mafia boss and the housekeeper vanished completely.

Then, his encrypted phone rang.

Luca slowly pulled his hand back, answering the call with a swift flick of his thumb.

*"Boss,"* the voice of the head security guard at the estate came through, breathless and panicked. *"We have a breach at the main gates. Lorenzo Bellini's remaining loyalists... they didn't run. They brought heavy explosives. They're trying to breach the compound!"*
