Chapter 4 - The Midnight Siege

The tranquility of the master suite lasted exactly forty-two minutes.

At 1:18 AM, the estate’s primary perimeter alarm did not chime; it detonated.

A deafening, synchronized hydraulic siren began pulsing through the concrete walls—the tactical war klaxon that signaled an active, multi-directional perimeter breach.

The heavy bulletproof glass of the south-facing terrace windows suddenly lit up in brilliant, violent flashes of white and orange flame as high-caliber automatic weapons fire began chewing through the limestone balustrades sixty feet below.

RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT.

"INCOMING!" Marco’s voice roared through the internal communications system on the master desk. "BOSS! WE HAVE THREE ARMORED SUVS BREACHING THE MAIN GATE! RUSSIAN MERCENARIES! IT’S MAKAROV’S SYNDICATE! THE BELLINIS GAVE THEM THE DIGITAL GATE CODES BEFORE THEY SURRENDERED!"

Luca moved with the blinding, terrifying speed of an apex predator that had survived twenty years of urban warfare.

He thrust Lily into my arms, lunged across the bedroom to the hidden panel beside the master fireplace, and slammed his palm against the biometric scanner.

The wall swung outward with a heavy, pressurized hiss, revealing a steel-lined walk-in tactical armory packed with custom automatic carbines, tactical plate carriers, night-vision optics, and stacks of high-capacity magazines.

"Claire!" Luca barked, tossing a lightweight Kevlar vest over my head, cinching the side velcro straps with two brutal, efficient pulls. "Take Lily into the panic room behind the safe! The door has its own auxiliary oxygen generator and a direct fiber-optic relay to the federal field office!"

"No, Luca!" I shouted, the daughter of a decorated tactical detective surging to the surface through my housekeeper's uniform.

I set Lily down on the floor of the armory, grabbed a customized short-barreled Colt M4 carbine from the wall rack, racked the charging handle with a crisp, practiced CLACK, and checked the chamber with a flick of my thumb.

Luca stopped mid-motion, his tactical vest half-zipped, staring at me with wide, disbelieving eyes.

"Where did you learn how to clear a military weapon?" Luca demanded, his voice slicing through the gunfire echoing up the stairwells.

"My father was a marine combat instructor before he was a police captain, Mr. Moretti," I replied, my voice steady, my gray eyes blazing with cold, tactical fire. "I was shooting expert marksman badges at Camp Perry when I was fourteen years old. You are not going downstairs alone."

A slow, terrifying, and magnificent smile spread across Luca’s scarred face—the smile of an underworld king who had just discovered that his queen was an armed valkyrie.

He tossed a tactical communications headset onto my shoulder, grabbed a heavy-caliber Benelli combat shotgun from the bench, and dropped to one knee before his daughter.

"Lily," Luca said softly, his hands cupping her small cheeks. "Listen to Daddy. Crawl into the vault behind the steel panel. Put on the noise-canceling earmuffs. Count to three hundred by tens. Do not come out until Claire or I tap the door three times. Do you understand, baby?"

Lily looked at the heavy assault rifle in my hands, then looked at her father's shotgun. She didn't cry. The blood of Maria and Luca Moretti ran through her veins; she nodded once, her jaw set with ancient, generational grit, and scrambled through the narrow reinforced vault hatch, pulling the heavy steel door shut behind her with a soft, airtight click.

Luca stood up, racking the slide of his shotgun with a concussive metallic roar.

"Marco!" Luca spoke into his throat mic. "What is our tactical posture on the ground floor?"

"They’re in the grand foyer, Boss!" Marco screamed over the deafening chatter of gunfire. "Twenty shooters! Body armor and thermite charges! They’ve pinned Salvatore’s men in the dining room! They’re heading for the grand staircase!"

Luca turned to me, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an unshakeable, lethal intensity that sucked the air from the room.

"Claire Dawson," Luca whispered, his hand gently, firmly gripping the back of my neck, pulling my forehead against his for a fraction of a second. "Keep your head down, shoot to kill, and stay on my six."

May you like

"Always, Luca," I replied.

We kicked open the master bedroom doors and stepped into the fire.
