Chapter 3 - The Empty Nest

The private jet touched down at Teterboro Airport under a heavy, weeping Manhattan rain.

Adrian didn’t wait for the ground crew to roll up the airstairs. He shoved the cabin door open himself, the damp wind instantly whipping his dark hair across his forehead. Ethan Brooks was waiting at the bottom of the tarmac, looking pale, soaked, and dangerously nervous.

"Report," Adrian barked, stepping off the plane while Brooke trailed nervously a few paces behind.

Ethan swallowed hard, falling into step beside Adrian as they power-walked toward the armored Mercedes waiting on the tarmac. "Mr. Cole... I tried to reach you an hour ago, but your satellite signal was bouncing off a dead relay over the Rockies."

"Skip the technical excuses, Ethan. Where is my wife?"

"She's... gone, sir."

Adrian stopped dead in his tracks. The rain beat a frantic tattoo against the roof of the car. He turned slowly, his eyes narrowing into cold, predatory slits. "What do you mean, *gone*?"

"The Manhattan penthouse," Ethan said, his voice tight with professional mortification. "She checked out. Or rather, she cleaned out. Security logs show she and her sister, Rachel Bennett, left the building at 4:30 AM yesterday with three heavy suitcases and an infant carrier."

For a full five seconds, the words didn't register in Adrian’s brain. They bounced off the walls of his logic like rubber bullets.

"That's impossible," Adrian said, his voice dropping an octave. "Claire was heavily pregnant. She could barely walk across the living room without resting. She has no car, no private pilot clearance—"

"She didn't need your clearance, Mr. Cole," Ethan interrupted quietly, holding out a manila folder. "She used a private charter service registered under a shell corporation called *Vanguard Holdings*. A company that, as it turns out, has been wholly owned by Claire Cole for the last four years."

Adrian snatched the folder from Ethan’s hands. Inside were legal documents, flight manifests, and bank routing numbers.

"What is this?" Adrian demanded, flipping the pages.

"It’s her exit strategy, sir," Ethan said grimly. "While you were building your empire, Mrs. Cole was quietly restructuring hers. Every clean logistics firm, every legal real estate holding, every untouchable asset that didn't have your name attached to it—she transferred them out of the main corporate umbrella last month. She legally severed herself from your primary accounts."

Adrian stared at the paper, his mind racing backward through years of board meetings, signatures, and quiet afternoons in the penthouse. Claire had always been his anchor. She had smiled while he signed dirty shipping contracts, telling him she trusted his judgment.

She hadn't trusted him. She had been building a fortress of her own.

"Where did the flight go?" Adrian asked, his voice shaking with a terrifying, suppressed fury.

"Flew out of Teterboro at dawn," Ethan said. "Refueled in Iceland. Final filed flight plan: Zurich, Switzerland."

Adrian crushed the manila folder in his fist, the paper tearing under the pressure of his grip. He looked past Ethan toward the city skyline, shrouded in grey mist.

"Saddle up every operative we have in Europe," Adrian snarled, climbing into the back of the Mercedes. "Nobody walks away from me. Nobody takes my son."
