Chapter 7 - The Audit of Blood

By five o'clock that morning, the truth had been hauled out of the shadows and nailed to the wall.

In the private second-floor library of the estate, Ava sat on a deep velvet sofa wrapped in a dry cashmere blanket, holding Emmy asleep in her lap. The little girl was breathing softly, her dark curls resting against Ava’s collarbone, her small hand clutching Ava’s thumb even in her dreams.

On the mahogany desk before Salvatore lay three thick leather portfolios stamped with the seal of the United States Department of Justice and the Forensic Accounting Division of the Federal Reserve.

Beside the desk stood Nathan Brooks, the foremost corporate defense attorney in Manhattan, who had arrived thirty minutes earlier under private armed escort.

"The paper trail is unassailable, Ava," Nathan reported, turning the ledger pages toward her. "Five years ago, Victoria Harper siphoned thirty-two million dollars from Trademax’s offshore shipping reserves into an unregulated trust account in the Cayman Islands."

Ava looked up, her dark eyes clear and burning with cold, focused steel. "And the embezzlement charges they used to send me to Green Haven?"

"Victoria paid three million dollars to a senior partner at your accounting firm to plant the shell routing keys on your work laptop," Nathan explained, his voice thick with professional disgust. "She needed Michael to believe you were a criminal so he would sign over his voting proxies before his heart failed. Once you were in prison, Victoria controlled Trademax."

"And Michael?" Ava asked softly. "His letter said he was receiving a donor heart. From 'someone close to us.'"

Salvatore’s expression darkened into an abyss of cold, murderous fury. He reached across the desk, sliding an internal medical dispatch from Mount Sinai Hospital into Ava’s view.

"Michael Harper never received a heart transplant, Ava," Salvatore said, every word dropping like an iron weight into the quiet room.

Ava’s breath hitched. "What?"

"Michael died on the operating table in Zurich twelve hours ago," Salvatore revealed quietly. "Victoria Harper paid the Swiss surgical team six hundred thousand dollars to declare him medically unsalvageable. The 'donor heart' was a fiction created to keep him from updating his will in his final weeks."

Salvatore leaned forward, resting his large, calloused hands on the desk.

"Michael left his entire four-hundred-million-dollar estate, including sixty percent of Trademax Logistics, in an irrevocable trust to Emmy Sinclair. Victoria realized that if Emmy was declared an unlocatable runaway ward of the state for seven consecutive days, the surrogate court would assign the entire trust to Victoria as the surviving legal heir."

Ava looked down at her sleeping daughter.

The pieces snapped together with horrifying, surgical clarity.

Victoria hadn't just abandoned Emmy. Victoria had hired street thugs to hunt a five-year-old child through the freezing rail yards of Queens, intending for the cold or an iron pipe to ensure that Michael’s daughter never reached her sixth birthday.

A dark, terrifying stillness settled over Ava Sinclair.

The woman who had survived five years in a maximum-security prison looked up at the king of the New York underworld.

"Where is she, Salvatore?" Ava asked, her voice as quiet and smooth as polished obsidian.

Salvatore stood to his full, towering height, unbuttoning his suit jacket to reveal his shoulder holster, his gray eyes burning with that rare, eternal devotion that belonged only to her.

"She is waiting for you in Red Hook, Ava," Salvatore replied softly.

"Let's go balance the ledger."
