Chapter 6 - The Breach

At two in the morning, the blizzard outside howled like a wounded animal.
I was resting in the master bedroom, wrapped in Dorian’s cashmere sweater, sipping the ginger tea Elena had made. Dorian was downstairs in the tactical room with Nikolai, finalizing the offensive strike scheduled for dawn against Vance’s south-side warehouse.
Suddenly, the lights flickered once, twice, and plunged the entire house into absolute blackness.
The emergency generators didn’t kick on.
Silence followed—an eerie, unnatural quiet that felt thicker than the darkness. Then came the pop-pop-pop of suppressed gunfire from the outer grounds.
My heart seized.
Before I could leap out of bed, the bedroom door was kicked open. A flashlight beam blinded me, and I opened my mouth to scream—
“Clara, move!”
Dorian’s voice cut through the dark. He wasn't in a suit anymore. He wore tactical black, an assault rifle slung across his chest, a heavy handgun in his grip. He grabbed my arm, yanking me out of bed and shoving a pair of heavy snow boots toward my feet.
“They severed the main power grid and jammed the backup generators,” he said, his voice flat, operating on cold combat adrenaline. “Nikolai’s team intercepted a breach at the southern gate, but it was a diversion. The main force came across the frozen lake on snowmobiles. They’re inside the perimeter.”
“How many?” I stammered, pulling the boots on with trembling fingers.
“Too many,” he answered grimly. “They brought mercenaries. Vance isn't waiting for my strike. He’s liquidating the board.”
Gunfire erupted downstairs—heavy, unsuppressed automatic weapons tearing through mahogany, marble, and crystal. The sound was deafening, vibrating through the floorboards beneath our feet. Shouts in Russian and English echoed up the grand staircase.
Dorian pulled me into the corridor. “The nursery panic room. It has an independent power cell and reinforced steel. You stay inside, lock the inner vault, and do not open it for anyone except my voice. If I don't return by sunrise, the satellite terminal will automatically broadcast an SOS to the FBI field office in Chicago. You use my private files in the safe to buy immunity.”
“No!” I gripped his tactical vest, staring into his fierce, wild eyes in the gloom. “You come with me! We can wait it out in the vault together!”
“The outer security door has to be manually deadbolted from the exterior control panel to engage the pressure seal,” he said, his hand gripping the back of my neck, pulling my face close. “If I don't engage it, they can breach it with thermal lances in thirty minutes. If I lock it from the hall, not even a tank shell can crack it.”
“Dorian, no! You’ll be trapped out here with them!”
“I’m not trapped with them, Clara,” he said, a terrifying, savage smirk curling the corner of his lips. “They’re trapped in my house with me.”
He shoved me toward the east wing. We sprinted down the hallway just as a volley of bullets tore through the plaster behind us, wood splinters flying like shrapnel. Dorian spun around, raising his rifle, and fired three controlled bursts down the stairs. Two men tumbled backward down the steps, their weapons clattering across the marble.
Dorian pushed me into the nursery, dragging me toward the bookshelf that concealed the vault door. He keyed in an eight-digit sequence. The heavy steel door slid open with a pneumatic hiss.
“Get in!” he commanded.
I looked at him, tears streaming down my face. “Dorian, please—”
“I love you,” he said. The words were simple, stripped of all arrogance, delivered like a final sacrament. “I have loved you from the first breath, and I will love you with my last. Protect our baby.”
He slammed the vault door shut.
The heavy steel sealed with a thud that echoed in my bones. Through the small reinforced viewport, I saw him punch the emergency lock sequence into the wall panel. Heavy titanium deadbolts slammed into the frame, completely isolating the room from the outside world.

Then, through the soundproof glass, I watched my husband turn around, chamber a round into his weapon, and walk back into the darkness.
