Chapter 6 - Descent into the Lion’s Den

The heavy-lift helicopter banked hard over the glittering skyline of Charlotte, banking downward in a steep, aggressive dive toward the sleek, obsidian-glass tower on the south side of the city—the global headquarters of Vanguard Capital.
Inside the pressurized cabin, the roar of the twin turbine engines was deafening, but Celeste Rowan barely noticed. She sat strapped into a reinforced jump seat, her fingers flying across the screen of her encrypted tablet.
Lines of code, financial ledgers, and offshore shell-company accounts cascaded down the display in a waterfall of green text.
“You’re breaking into Vanguard’s primary financial database?” Ethan asked, leaning over the center console as he strapped a heavy ceramic plate carrier vest over his wounded shoulder, wincing only slightly as the rigid armor settled against his bruised flesh.
“Marcus made one fatal mistake when he initiated the buyout protocol,” Celeste said without looking up, her blue eyes gleaming with fierce, calculated brilliance. “To fund an off-the-books mercenary hit squad and a hostile corporate takeover of this magnitude, he couldn't use Vanguard’s official operational accounts. He had to funnel capital through a network of illicit offshore shell companies based in the Cayman Islands.”
She tapped the screen triumphantly, bringing up a complex web of corporate entities linked to a single master account bearing Marcus Vance’s personal biometric digital signature.
“And?” Ethan prompted, watching her with a look of profound, undeniable respect.
“And I just bypassed their firewall, seized administrative control of their primary liquidity fund, and transferred seven point eight billion dollars directly into Ardent Veil’s secure corporate treasury,” Celeste said, a cold, triumphant smile touching her lips. “Marcus wanted my company? I just took his entire financial liquidity. Without those funds, Vanguard Capital is completely bankrupt by noon today.”
Ethan let out a low, appreciative whistle. “Remind me never to get on your bad side, Ms. Rowan.”
“Keep calling me Ms. Rowan after we survive this, and I might test that theory,” she retorted sharply, though there was a faint spark of amusement in her eyes.
The helicopter flared sharply, decelerating instantly as it dropped out of the cloud cover and hovered directly over the expansive, glass-domed rooftop landing pad of the Vanguard Capital skyscraper.
Through the reinforced windshield, Celeste could see a group of armed tactical guards rushing toward the landing pad, raising their rifles as they realized the incoming aircraft wasn't their expected backup team.
“We’re hot!” shouted the pilot over the intercom. “LZ is compromised! We’ve got armed opposition on the pad!”
Ethan didn't hesitate. He checked the magazine of his submachine gun, racked the charging handle with a sharp, metallic *clack*, and slid the cabin door wide open, letting a rush of freezing, high-altitude wind whip through the interior.
“Stay behind me!” Ethan yelled over the roar of the turbine rotors. “When we hit the deck, follow my lead straight into the stairwell access hatch!”
The helicopter touched down with a heavy thud against the reinforced concrete pad. Before the skids had even fully settled, Ethan vaulted out of the cabin, hitting the ground in a tactical roll and instantly bringing his weapon up to suppress the advancing guards.
*Pfft-pfft-pfft!*
Two of Vanguard’s guards dropped instantly, neutralized by non-lethal heavy rubber batons fired from Ethan’s under-barrel launcher, while the remaining guards scrambled for cover behind the massive HVAC cooling units.
“Move, move, move!” Ethan shouted, waving his hand toward Celeste.
Celeste unbuckled her safety harness, leaped out of the helicopter, and sprinted across the concrete helipad, her bare feet pounding against the cold surface as she kept low under the swirling rotor wash.
Bullets pinged off the metal hull of the helicopter behind them, but Ethan laid down a relentless wall of suppressing fire, covering her every step until they reached the heavy steel stairwell hatch.
Ethan kicked the emergency release lever with his boot, slamming the door open, and pulled Celeste inside just as a concentrated burst of automatic gunfire chewed up the concrete around the frame.

They slammed the heavy steel door shut, engaging the manual deadbolts, and plunged down into the dim, echoing stairwell of the enemy’s stronghold.
