Chapter 8 - The Pentagon Briefing

By Friday morning, the cold rain had followed me down to the District of Columbia, blanketing the marble monuments of the capital in a dense, silver mist.
Inside the Pentagon’s Executive Acquisition Briefing Room (Room 3E-864), the air was pressurized, filtered, and smelled of polished black walnut, fresh coffee, and high-level defense authority.
Sitting around the massive horseshoe-shaped conference table were twelve general officers, two undersecretaries of defense, and three senior procurement examiners wearing gold Department of Defense lapel pins.
At the center of the briefing floor stood me.
I wore an impeccably tailored dark charcoal pantsuit, an ivory silk blouse unbuttoned two inches at the collar, my dark hair swept back into an austere, razor-sharp chignon, my silver Bronze Star and Army Commendation ribbons pinned discreetly above my breast pocket.
Beside me stood Marcus Thorne, holding our master logistics dossier.
On the sixty-foot digital display wall behind me, the integrated schematic of Project Iron Gate was glowing in brilliant, multi-layered tactical detail:

3. 3,200 AUTOMATED ELECTRIC TRANSIT RIGS (NEXUS COMPLIANT)

General Raymond Vance sat at the center of the horseshoe table, his spectacles pushed down onto his nose, reviewing the final financial underwriting report.
"Captain Sterling," a two-star naval admiral spoke from the far end of the table, his eyes sharp and evaluative. "Your technical infrastructure is indisputable. The integration of Blackwood Terminal solves our primary staging bottleneck for Atlantic deployment. But the board must address operational risk. The recent acquisition of Vanguard Logistics... the public scandal surrounding its former management... how does Apex ensure that family litigation won't cloud this asset?"
I stepped forward to the briefing lectern, resting my hands flat against the mahogany.
"Admiral," I said, my voice smooth, clear, and resonant with absolute, unyielding command.
"Vanguard Logistics was not acquired as an ongoing concern. It was foreclosed, liquidated, and dismantled under Section Nine of the Uniform Commercial Code.
Every corrupt executive officer was terminated with prejudice forty-eight hours ago.
