Chapter 8 - The Trap at Crow’s Reach

The rain over Red Hook was torrential, turning the industrial docks into a murky landscape of rust, salt spray, and shadows.

Warehouse 14 loomed at the edge of the abandoned pier, its corrugated metal walls rattling in the gale-force wind. Inside, the cavernous space smelled of diesel, rotting wood, and wet rust. High overhead, sodium-vapor lights hummed with a sickly yellow glare.

Priya was tied to a wooden support pillar in the center of the warehouse, her mouth covered with heavy duct tape, her face bruised and streaked with tears.

Damian stood ten feet away from her, pacing like a caged beast. He had abandoned his fine tailoring for a dark utility coat; his hair was unkempt, his eyes bloodshot and hollowed by cocaine and mania. In his hand was a heavy revolver.

The rusted metal pedestrian door creaked open.

Evelyn stepped through.

She walked alone, her black coat open, her hands clearly visible at her sides. Every step echoed against the concrete floor.

"Evelyn!" Damian shouted, a deranged smile breaking across his face as he leveled the revolver at her chest. "You actually came. Look at you. The devoted friend. The repentant bride."

Priya thrashed against her ropes, shaking her head frantically, muffled screams issuing from behind the tape.

"Let her go, Damian," Evelyn said, stopping twenty feet away, her voice ringing clear through the cavernous space. "You have what you wanted. I am here. Let Priya walk out the door."

"Nobody walks out until I say so!" Damian screamed, his voice cracking with hysteria. "Do you have any idea what you did to me? My accounts are gone! My name is dirt! My investors are cooperating with the feds! You destroyed everything I built in ten years!"

"You destroyed yourself," Evelyn said coldly, taking a slow step forward. "You built an empire on lies, theft, and beatings. You thought because I didn't fight back, I was weak. You thought because I covered my bruises with makeup, I had forgotten what you did to me."

"You were nothing until I found you!" Damian yelled, stepping toward her, raising the gun higher. "You were an impoverished socialite with a bankrupt father! I gave you prestige! I gave you luxury!"

"You gave me a cage," Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a register of icy, absolute contempt. "And you are nothing but a coward who preys on people who cannot fight back."

Damian’s face contorted into pure rage. "I’m going to kill Voss’s men outside, I’m going to kill that little bitch behind you, and then you are getting on that boat to South America with me! You are going to be my wife whether you like it or—"

*Crack.*

The skylight thirty feet above Damian’s head shattered into thousands of cascading shards of glass.

Before Damian could look up, a high-velocity sniper round from Roman’s maritime position punched through the concrete floor inches from Damian’s boot, sending sparks and pulverized stone flying into his face.

Damian stumbled back, blinded by dust, raising his revolver wildly to fire toward Priya.

Evelyn didn't hesitate.

The ceramic-composite pistol was in her hand in a fraction of a second, just as Roman had taught her. She raised both arms, leveled the sights on Damian’s weapon hand, exhaled, and squeezed the trigger.

The gunshot cracked like thunder in the enclosed space.

The bullet struck Damian’s right shoulder with sickening force. The revolver flew from his shattered grip, clattering across the wet concrete. Damian screamed in agony, collapsing against the wooden crates, clutching his bleeding arm.

Before he could recover, the heavy loading doors of the warehouse were blown off their hinges by explosive breaching charges. Voss tactical teams flooded the floor, red laser sights painting the room, disarming the remaining guards in seconds.

Roman entered through the smoke, moving with terrifying speed, his weapon drawn. He ignored the chaos, his eyes locking onto Evelyn until he confirmed she was unharmed.

Evelyn lowered her weapon. She walked past the moaning, bleeding form of Damian Crow without a second glance. She knelt beside Priya, pulling out a tactical blade, and sliced the ropes binding her best friend.

"I’m here," Evelyn whispered, pulling a sobbing Priya into her arms. "It’s over. You're safe."

Behind them, Roman stood over Damian. He kicked Damian’s fallen weapon into the sea below the pier’s drainage grate, looking down at the broken man with the cold detachment of a judge delivering a final verdict.

"The federal marshals are at the gate, Crow," Roman said quietly. "You will spend the rest of your natural life in a supermax facility in Florence, Colorado. And if you ever speak Evelyn Sterling’s name again, even behind bars, I will ensure your remaining days are very, very short."

May you like

Damian could only sob, clutching his bloody shoulder in the dirt, the magnificent illusion of his power completely shattered.
