Chapter 3 - Receipts and Shadows

“It’s not what it looks like!” Daniel gasped, his professional veneer shattering completely. “Madeline insisted! She needed liquidity! Her trust fund allowance was capped last year after the Monaco incident—she begged me to find a way to cash out the high-value inventory!”

“You coward!” Madeline shrieked, lunging toward Daniel before Richard’s second security guard stepped between them. “You took a cut! You took twenty percent off every single transaction!”

“Because I was the one taking the risk!” Daniel yelled back, completely losing his composure. “You threatened to have your father fire me if I didn’t cooperate! You said you owned me!”

The luxury boutique had devolved into a courtroom brawl.

Emily stood behind the counter, her breath catching in her throat. Suddenly, everything that had plagued her over the last eight months clicked into place. The missing commissions. The phantom inventory shortages that Daniel had blamed on floor staff negligence. The docked wages.

Last month, Emily’s commission statement had dropped by nearly eighteen percent. When she had confronted Daniel in his office, he had smiled that polished, predatory smile and told her that storewide shrinkage had triggered a corporate penalty clause. He had looked her in the eye while she begged for that missing four hundred dollars—the exact amount she needed for her mother’s cardiac medication—and told her to work harder.

And all the while, he and Madeline Whitmore had been laundering hundreds of thousands of dollars through the boutique’s POS system using Emily’s and her coworkers’ logins.

Richard Whitmore didn’t flinch at the shouting. He raised one hand, and the room snapped back to silence.

“Evelyn,” Richard said calmly.

“Yes, Mr. Whitmore?”

“Call the fraud division of the Metropolitan Police. Have them dispatch two units to Aster & Rowe immediately. Then notify corporate legal. I want Daniel Mercer’s assets frozen before the markets close today.”

Daniel slumped against the handbag display case, knocking over a display stand holding an eleven-thousand-dollar ostrich leather tote. Nobody picked it up.

“Dad, stop!” Madeline pleaded, tears of humiliation finally cutting tracks through her foundation. “You’re calling the police? To your own store? To arrest Daniel? What about the press? The Whitmore name will be ruined! Page Six will have a field day!”

“The Whitmore name was ruined the moment my daughter turned into a petty thief,” Richard said, his words landing like blows. “You think because you wear seven-thousand-dollar silk that you aren’t a thief? You stole from this company. You stole from me. And worst of all…”

Richard turned slowly, his eyes fixing on Emily.

“…you stole from the people who actually work for a living.”

Madeline looked at Emily, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated hatred. “From *her*? She’s an hourly clerk! She doesn’t matter!”

Richard took two slow steps toward Madeline. When he spoke, his voice was so low only those closest could hear, but the venom in it was lethal. “Miss Carter stood there with nothing in her bank account and chose honesty over surrender. You stood there with a platinum card and chose to swindle your own father. If I had to trade your character for hers right now, Madeline, I would do it without a second thought.”

Madeline stepped back, stunned, clutching her handbag to her chest as if it could shield her from her father’s disgust.

Daniel, however, was not finished. Desperation has a way of turning cornered rats vicious.

From where he slumped against the display, Daniel looked up, his eyes bloodshot and wild. He pointed a trembling, sweat-slicked finger at Emily.

“Don’t act so righteous, Mr. Whitmore!” Daniel spat. “You think your little floor saint is innocent? You think she’s just a noble victim?”

Emily stiffened. “What are you talking about?”

May you like

“Check her locker!” Daniel screamed, his voice echoing off the limestone walls. “Check locker number twelve in the employee suite! Ask her why there’s a diamond-encrusted Cartier watch from the private vault hidden in her canvas bag! Go look!”
