Chapter 12 - A Mother’s Poisoned Plea

The county sheriff arrived ten minutes later, carting the intruder away. By dawn, federal agents were back at the farm. The intruder had been identified as a private operative working for an offshore banking cartel that Robert had used to wash tens of millions in illicit funds.

As Caroline was updating us in the living room, a deputy entered carrying a sealed envelope with the county correctional facility’s official stamp.

"Delivered by courier an hour ago," the deputy said, handing it to me. "From Eleanor Hale. She demanded it be given directly to you."

My fingers shook as I tore open the envelope. The handwriting was uneven, shaky, written on cheap yellow legal paper with a stubby pencil.

*Shelby,*

*You think you won. You think locking your father and me in cages makes you safe. You are so hopelessly naive, just like your grandmother was.*

*Robert didn't just steal from your trust. He borrowed forty million dollars from people who do not use courts to settle their debts. They let him live because he convinced them that Evelyn's trust held the master ledger of their international shell accounts. If Robert stays in prison, they will eliminate everyone with Hale blood to erase the paper trail—starting with you and that bastard child you’re carrying.*

*I have the code to Evelyn’s private safety deposit box at the downtown vault. Inside is the only immunity contract the cartel will honor. Come visit me alone in the detention center today, Shelby. Sign the petition for my medical release, and I will give you the key to save your child’s life. Let me rot, and you won’t survive until your third trimester.*

*Your loving mother, Eleanor.*

"She's lying," Bridget whispered, her face pale as a ghost. "She’s trying to manipulate you to get out on bail."

"No," Caroline said gravely, reviewing the blueprints the intruder had carried. "The cartel wouldn't send a hit-team to break into a secure bank vault unless there was something worth killing for inside."

Bradley stepped close, wrapping his arm around my shoulder, his face unreadable but his jaw tight as steel. "We don't bargain with Eleanor. But we aren't waiting for them to bring the fight to our doorstep again, either."

"What do we do?" I asked, looking into his steady eyes.

"We go to the vault," Bradley said. "We open that box ourselves."
