Chapter 5 - The Line in the Sand

A shriek of agony tore through the hallway as the lead operative took two rounds through the wooden door into his shoulder and collarbone, collapsing backward onto the runner rug with a heavy crash.

"She’s armed!" the second man yelled, spraying a blind burst of automatic fire through the drywall overhead, sending plaster dust raining down like white snow.

Norah ducked behind the armchair, shielding her head with one arm while keeping her weapon trained on the breach.

Before the second operative could advance, the sound of screeching tires and a roaring V8 engine exploded from the driveway outside.

A black Maybach tore through the front lawn, plowing directly into the rear quarter-panel of the intruders' getaway van with the concussive force of an artillery shell.

CRASH!

Shouts erupted downstairs.

Then came the gunfire—not the controlled, stealthy bursts of assassins, but the overwhelming, apocalyptic roar of heavy automatic weaponry wielded by men who were executing an extermination.

Dominic Vain had arrived.

Heavy boots pounded up the grand staircase four at a time.

The second operative in the hallway panicked, turning to flee toward the service balcony—

BANG.

A single, high-caliber rifle round ripped through the window, striking the operative in the chest, dropping him instantly onto the floorboards.

Dominic stepped through the shattered doorway of the playroom.

He wore no coat. His dress shirt was soaked in rain and flecked with blood, his sleeves rolled back, his slate-gray eyes burning with a murderous, feral madness that made the room temperature feel like absolute zero. In his right hand, he held a smoking tactical carbine.

He scanned the room.

He saw the broken door. He saw the spent shell casings on the carpet.

Then his gaze dropped to the overturned armchair.

Norah slowly rose to her feet, holding the Sig Sauer pointed safely toward the ceiling, her face streaked with plaster dust, her hair wild around her shoulders.

Beneath the table behind her, three small voices piped up in terrified relief:

"Daddy! Mama shot the door!"

Dominic dropped his rifle.

The heavy weapon hit the carpet with a dull thud.

He crossed the room in two massive strides, his trembling, blood-stained hands grabbing Norah by the waist, hauling her off her feet, slamming her flush against his chest with a desperate, crushing strength that knocked the wind from her lungs.

"Are you hit?" Dominic breathed, his voice cracking into a jagged, ragged gasp as he buried his face in her neck, his heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped beast. "Norah... look at me. Did they touch you? Did anything touch you?!"

Norah let the pistol slip from her fingers, wrapping her arms around his broad, shaking shoulders, pressing her face into the crook of his neck.

"We are whole, Dominic," she whispered, her fingers digging into his damp shirt. "The boys are safe. I held the line."

Dominic pulled back slightly, his large, calloused hands cupping her face, his thumbs wiping the plaster dust from her cheeks with infinite tenderness.

He looked into her clear, unyielding hazel eyes, seeing the absolute, fearless devotion of a woman who had stood between an execution squad and three children that were not her biological blood.

"You're not a shield, Norah," Dominic whispered, his voice thick with a revelation that shattered twenty years of cynicism.

"You are the queen of this house.

And anyone who touches you...

dies in the dark."
