Chapter 3 - The Society of Wolves

The heavy emerald-green velvet of the backless evening gown felt like liquid armor against Khloe’s skin.
Stand up straight, she told herself, meeting her own gaze in the three-way gilded mirror of the Rainier Club’s private mezzanine suite. The transformation was terrifyingly complete. The exhausted, frayed woman who had crawled under a restaurant table forty-eight hours ago had vanished, replaced by an apparition of untouchable wealth. Her chestnut hair was pinned up in an intricate, classic chignon, leaving the elegant sweep of her neck bare except for a collar of antique diamonds that felt heavy and cold as ice.
On her left ring finger sat the centerpiece of the illusion: a flawless, three-carat emerald-cut diamond set in platinum, heavy enough to weigh down her hand.
"Stop adjusting the ring," Dante’s voice came from the doorway.
Khloe looked up. Dante stood framed against the mahogany paneling, looking lethal in a custom black tuxedo that accentuated the broad sweep of his shoulders and the dangerous stillness of his posture. He adjusted his platinum cufflinks with casual elegance, his dark eyes raking over her from the crown of her head to the tips of her silk stilettos.
For a brief, suspended second, the hard, unyielding mask on his face cracked, revealing a flash of raw, possessive hunger that sent a jolt of electricity straight to the pit of Khloe’s stomach.
"You look... acceptable," he said, his voice dropping half an octave as he crossed the room.
"Acceptable?" Khloe scoffed, leaning into the bravado she had spent the last two hours rehearsing. "This dress costs more than my college tuition, Mr. Varga. If I trip and tear the hem, I’m bankrupt."
"If you trip, I will catch you," Dante said, stopping directly behind her. He placed his large hands on her bare shoulders, his warm palms contrasting sharply with the chill of the velvet. His reflection loomed over hers in the glass—beauty and the beast rendered in bespoke silk and diamonds. "And out there, you do not call me Mr. Varga. You call me Dante. You lean into me when I speak. You look at me as though I am the only man in this room who matters."
Khloe swallowed, her throat dry. Through the heavy oak doors, the muffled hum of an orchestra and the clinking of champagne flutes signaled the arrival of Seattle’s elite—governors, judges, corporate titans, and the ruthless underworld barons who pulled their strings.
"What if I say the wrong thing?" she asked, her voice faltering despite her resolve. "What if someone asks about my background?"
"You are an independent logistics consultant who met me at an art auction in Vancouver," Dante instructed, leaning down until his lips brushed the sensitive skin just below her ear, sending a shiver cascading down her spine. "You find high society boring. You find violence distasteful. And you find me utterly irresistible. Keep your answers brief, let me handle the details, and above all else—watch Marco Moretti."
Khloe stiffened at the name. "The man Jared works for?"
"The man Jared *used* to work for," Dante corrected smoothly. "Marco is the eldest son of the Moretti clan. He is vicious, arrogant, and convinced that my succession is a mistake. He will try to test you. He will try to find a seam in your armor and pull the thread until you unravel. Do not give him an inch."
"I survived two years with a narcissistic sociopath," Khloe said, turning within the circle of his arms to face him directly, her hazel eyes blazing with defiant amber flecks. "A mobster in a tuxedo doesn't scare me."
A slow, genuine smirk curled Dante’s lips. "Good. Let's go show the wolves what I brought home."
He offered his arm. Khloe took it, feeling the corded muscle beneath the fine wool.
When the double doors opened to the grand ballroom, the shift in the atmosphere was instantaneous. The vast hall, hung with crystal chandeliers and draped in crimson silk, fell into an unnatural, selective quiet as Dante and Khloe descended the grand marble staircase. Conversations halted mid-sentence; champagne glasses hovered halfway to lips; heads turned in synchronized curiosity.
Dante walked with the easy, predatory grace of a conqueror, completely unbothered by the collective gaze of two hundred people. Beside him, Khloe forced her chin up, matching his stride, letting the weight of the diamonds steady her pulse.
"Dante, my boy!"
An elderly man with snow-white hair and a cane topped with a silver eagle blocked their path. Beside him stood a judge Khloe recognized from local election billboards.
"Don Silvio," Dante inclined his head with rare, measured deference. "Allow me to introduce my fiancée, Khloe Bennett. Khloe, this is Silvio Moretti, the patriarch of the Southern District."
The old man’s rheumy eyes locked onto Khloe like a hawk spotting prey in tall grass. He took her gloved hand, raising it to his lips with old-world courtesy, though his gaze never left hers. "A stunning surprise, Dante. In twenty years, you have never brought a woman to the Winter Gala. We began to think you were married to the shipping docks."
"Dante simply has standards," Khloe said before she could censor herself, offering the patriarch a cool, luminous smile that looked completely effortless. "He doesn't parade what he treasures most until the time is right."
Don Silvio blinked, momentarily caught off-guard by the sharp tongue behind the delicate face, before letting out a wheezing, appreciative chuckle. "Sharp as a razor. Good. In this family, a blunt blade gets you killed."
Before Dante could guide her away, a younger man pushed through the circle of associates. He was slick, handsome in a cruel, sharp-featured way, with slicked-back pomade and a double-breasted suit that screamed new money.
Marco Moretti.
"Well, well," Marco drawled, swirling a glass of vintage scotch, his eyes sliding down Khloe’s body with open, insulting hunger. "The mysterious bird finally leaves her cage. You look remarkably familiar, Miss Bennett. Are you certain we haven't met before? Perhaps down around the industrial park on 4th Avenue? I hear there are a lot of interesting things crawling around the service alleys down there."
The jab was direct. A deliberate, venomous reference to Jared’s territory.
Dante’s jaw tightened, the muscle ticking beneath the skin of his cheek. The temperature around their circle plunged toward freezing. Khloe felt the sudden, terrifying shift in Dante’s posture—the silent command to strike that was radiating through his arm. If Dante drew blood here, the truce between the families would disintegrate before midnight.
Khloe acted without thinking.
She stepped forward half an inch, placing a manicured hand flat against Dante’s broad chest, a gesture of absolute, effortless control that stopped the mob boss dead in his tracks. Then, she turned her full, cold attention to Marco Moretti.
"I doubt it, Mr. Moretti," Khloe said, her voice clear, melodious, and carrying easily over the muted murmur of the surrounding crowd. "I rarely spend time in places that rely on bankrupt sports-betting rings to pay their electric bills. But I did notice your cousin limping through the parking garage earlier—perhaps you should spend less time watching alleys and more time learning how to balance your family’s ledgers."
Dead silence fell over the perimeter.
Marco’s face flushed a violent, mottled crimson. A few older men in the background, loyal to Dante’s faction, masked their chuckles behind linen napkins. Marco took an aggressive step forward, his fist clenching around his tumbler, but before he could cross the threshold of propriety, Dante moved.
It was not a violent explosion, but a total, suffocating displacement. Dante shifted into the space between Khloe and Marco, looking down at the younger Moretti from his superior height, his eyes dead, black, and completely merciless.
"Walk away, Marco," Dante whispered, the volume low enough that only the three of them could hear, yet carrying the finality of a gunshot. "Before I decide that your tongue is as broken as Jared Miller’s knee."
Marco swallowed hard, the bravado evaporating under the pure, unadulterated menace rolling off the Varga boss. He threw a venomous glare at Khloe, pivoted on his heel, and vanished into the crowd of his retainers.
Dante turned back to Khloe. For several long seconds, he simply stared at her, the dark intensity in his gaze hotter than anything she had ever experienced.
"Logistics consultant," Dante murmured, his voice thick with dark amusement and profound respect. "Remind me never to negotiate a contract against you, Miss Bennett."
"I told you," Khloe whispered, letting out the breath she had been holding as her fingers trembled against his lapel. "I don't crawl anymore."
Dante leaned down, his arm sliding around her lower back, pulling her flush against his chest in front of the entire assembly of Seattle’s underworld. He pressed a slow, firm kiss to the corner of her lips—a public declaration of war, ownership, and something far more dangerous.

"Good," he growled against her mouth. "Because you are going to help me burn them all to the ground."
