Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in the Dark

The underground parking garage of the Palmer House Hilton was dim, echoing with the distant hum of traffic and the hollow sound of footsteps.
Claire had stepped away from Julian for a moment to take an international call from one of their Swiss bankers regarding the second phase of the Mercer-Whitmore acquisition. She stood near a concrete pillar in the shadows, her phone pressed to her ear.
"Yes, execute the transfer," she said smoothly into the phone. "If the board objects, remind them who holds the primary voting shares. Good night."
She hung up and turned to head back toward the private elevator.
A shadow detached itself from the pillar beside her.
"Climbing into bed with my worst enemy. Was that part of your father’s estate planning too, Claire?"
Claire didn't jump. She didn't gasp. She slowly lowered her phone and turned to face Ethan.
He looked terrible. His tie was loosened, his hair slightly disheveled, and his eyes were bloodshot. The polished corporate titan was gone, replaced by a desperate, furious man.
"Ethan," Claire said, her voice entirely devoid of emotion. "You shouldn't be down here. It’s bad for your blood pressure."
"Don't do that," Ethan snarled, taking a step closer, backing her gently against the cold concrete pillar. "Don't talk to me like I’m a business associate. We are husband and wife!"
Claire let out a short, cold laugh. "Husband and wife? Is that what we were when your mother sent you that text? *'If she refuses tonight, use the other plan. Once this is done, she’ll leave with nothing.'* Is that how a husband treats his wife, Ethan?"
Ethan flinched, the words hitting him like a physical blow. "That... that was out of context. My mother talks nonsense, you know how she is—"
"I know exactly how she is," Claire interrupted, her voice dropping an octave, becoming dangerously sharp. "And I know exactly how you are. You didn't want a wife, Ethan. You wanted a signature. You wanted my father’s empire to pad your fragile ego."
Ethan reached out, grabbing her wrist. Not violently, but firmly. "And what are you doing now? Marrying Julian Mercer? Showing off his ring to the whole city? Do you have any idea what people are saying? You’re destroying our name!"
"Your name," Claire corrected, twisting her wrist free with surprising strength, stepping out of his reach. "My father’s name was Whitmore before your family leeched onto it. And as for Julian... he knows how to value a partner. Something you were never capable of doing."
Ethan stared at her hand, his eyes locking onto the massive diamond ring sparkling in the dim fluorescent light.
"Take it off," he whispered, his voice cracking slightly.
"Excuse me?"
"Take the ring off, Claire. Come home. Drop the lawsuit with Mercer. We can fix this. We can... we can start over."
For a split second, something flickered in Claire’s chest—a tiny echo of the girl who had bought a pair of white baby socks three months ago. But it was instantly consumed by the roaring fire of her anger.
She looked down at the ring, then back up into Ethan’s desperate eyes.
"Start over?" she asked softly, stepping closer to him, her voice a chilling whisper. "Ethan... you don't even know what you’ve lost. And by the time this is over, you won't even have a home to go back to."
Before Ethan could reply, the heavy metal doors of the elevator chimed, and Julian Mercer stepped out, his dark eyes scanning the garage before landing on them.
"Claire," Julian called out, walking over smoothly, slipping a protective, possessive arm around Claire’s waist. He looked at Ethan with a cool, mocking smirk. "Is there a problem here, Mr. Whitmore? Because if you’re harassing my fiancée, I’ll have security escort you out of the building."
*Fiancée.*
The word dropped like an anvil between them.
Ethan’s fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white. He looked at Julian, then at Claire, who leaned slightly into Julian’s side, looking every bit the untouchable queen.
"This isn't over," Ethan muttered, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. "Neither of you has won yet."
May you like
He turned and walked away into the shadows of the garage, the sound of his footsteps echoing off the concrete like a countdown to war.
