Chapter 6 - Blood on the Stems

The peace lasted exactly forty-eight hours.

On Saturday afternoon, Bennett Blooms was bustling with customers buying autumn wreaths, cinnamon-scented pinecones, and late-harvest dahlias. Maya was working the register, laughing with a regular customer, while Harper was in the back trimming stems for a delivery order.

Outside, the two black SUVs sat at their usual posts.

Then, the world shattered.

A deafening *BOOM* shook the foundation of the building, rattling the glass ceiling of the greenhouse. Screams erupted from the front of the shop as the sound of automatic gunfire ripped through the autumn afternoon.

"Harper!" Maya shrieked.

Harper dropped her shears and sprinted toward the front of the shop.

The large front display window—the glass with her grandmother’s hand-painted gold lettering—was completely gone, blown inward into a million sparkling shards. A dark delivery van had jumped the curb, smashing into the front awning. Four masked men in tactical gear were pouring out of the vehicle, weapons raised.

Across the street, Damian’s security detail had already engaged. Gunfire echoed through the narrow corridor of Pine Street, deafening and brutal.

"Get down!" Harper screamed, lunging across the counter and tackling Maya to the floor behind the heavy brick display island just as a hail of bullets tore through the refrigerator glass, obliterating dozens of vases in an explosion of water and severed rose petals.

"What is happening?! Oh God, oh God!" Maya wept, curling into a ball, covering her head with her hands.

"Stay here! Don't move!" Harper ordered.

One of the masked men vaulted over the shattered windowsill, his assault rifle sweeping across the room. He spotted Harper behind the counter and leveled the barrel directly at her chest.

"Bennett!" he barked. "Hands where I can see them!"

Harper’s mind went blank with terror, but before the man could pull the trigger, the rear office door was kicked off its hinges with explosive force.

Lucas appeared.

He didn't hesitate. Two deafening cracks rang out from his sidearm. The masked man collapsed onto the tile floor with a heavy, wet thud, knocking over a brass urn filled with white calla lilies.

"Miss Bennett, move!" Lucas roared, grabbing Harper by the upper arm and hauling her to her feet. "Now! Out the back!"

"Maya! I can't leave Maya!" Harper shouted, fighting against his iron grip.

Lucas reached down with one massive arm, grabbed Maya by her apron strap, and slung her over his shoulder like a sack of flour. "Both of you, move!"

They sprinted through the back workroom and burst out into the rear alley.

The alley was a warzone. Smoke from flashbang grenades hung thick in the cold air, smelling of sulfur and burnt rubber. Another black SUV was idling violently at the alley exit, its rear doors thrown wide open.

"Get them in!" Lucas shouted to the driver, shoving Harper and a sobbing Maya into the reinforced leather seats.

Just as Lucas slammed the heavy, bulletproof door shut, a bullet sparked off the reinforced glass inches from Harper’s face. The SUV’s engine screamed, tires smoking as it peeled out into the street, throwing Harper back against the seat cushions.

Harper turned, pressing her hands against the rear window.

Through the clearing smoke, she saw Bennett Blooms.

Her shop. Her grandmother’s legacy. The walls were riddled with bullet holes. The green awning hung in burning shreds. Water from shattered vases poured out onto the sidewalk, carrying thousands of blood-red carnation petals into the street gutters like a scarlet river.

Tears blurred Harper’s vision, hot and furious.

"Where are you taking us?" Harper choked out, her voice raw, turning to the stone-faced driver.

"The Vale Estate," the driver replied, his voice devoid of emotion as he navigated the armored vehicle through red lights at eighty miles per hour. "The boss gave direct orders. Full lockdown protocol. The entire city is shutting down."

Harper pulled out her trembling phone. The screen lit up with news alerts flashing in frantic red banners across local media:

*BREAKING: MASS CASUALTY INCIDENT IN DOWNTOWN PHILADELPHIA.*

*POLICE COMMISSIONER DECLARES CITYWIDE TACTICAL EMERGENCY.*

*VALE HOLDINGS HEADQUARTERS SURROUNDED BY PRIVATE SECURITY FORCES.*

Beneath the headlines was a single text message from an unknown number, received forty seconds ago:

*He cannot protect you forever, little florist. The city belongs to the Thorne Foundation. — J.T.*

Harper clutched the phone to her chest, her knuckles turning white. The gentle, quiet life she had built was gone, incinerated in a hail of gunfire.

May you like

And she knew, with terrifying certainty, that Damian Vale was about to burn whatever remained of Philadelphia to the ground.
