Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

The rain had stopped by the time I walked back into the grand DC mansion where my nightmare had begun. This time, I wasn't sneaking in. I wasn't running away.
I walked through the front double doors in my full Class-A Army uniform. The dark blue jacket was pressed to a razor-sharp edge, my ribbons gleaming under the crystal chandeliers, and my silver sergeant stripes catching the light.
Rhys Hale was sitting behind his massive mahogany desk, staring blankly at a muted television screen displaying his own face with the word RESIGN emblazoned across the graphic. His hair was disheveled, his tie loosened, and his eyes bloodshot. The untouchable politician looked like a ghost.
He looked up as my combat boots clicked rhythmically against the hardwood floor.
"Maddox..." he rasped, his voice hollow. "You... you ruined everything."
I stopped five feet from his desk, standing at absolute attention—spine straight, shoulders squared, chin up.
"You broke protocol, Congressman," I said, my voice echoing in the silent study. "You assaulted a soldier. You stole my life, my money, and my dignity. And you forgot the fundamental rule of combat: never back a soldier into a corner unless you're prepared for the counter-offensive."
Rhys stood up, his face flushing with a desperate, pathetic rage. He lunged toward the desk, pointing a shaking finger at me. "I am your father! I made you! I can have you dishonorably discharged with a single phone call!"
The heavy oak doors behind me swung open.
Colonel Thomas Vance walked into the study, flanked by two armed military police officers in crisp dress uniforms. He stepped between Rhys and me, flashing a federal military arrest warrant.

"Congressman Rhys Hale, you are being detained under the Uniform Code of Military Justice and federal statute for the assault of an active-duty service member, extortion, and financial fraud," Colonel Vance announced, his voice ringing with absolute authority.
The two MPs stepped forward, grabbing Rhys by both arms and slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists. The proud, arrogant senator thrashed weakly, his expensive suit wrinkling as he was hauled away in disgrace.
