Chapter 6 - THE SETUP

Dawn broke over the city not with light, but with a dirty, bruised-purple gloom.

By 7:00 A.M., the internet was ablaze.

A video filmed from the third row of St. Bartholomew’s Chapel had hit TikTok and Twitter at midnight. It already had fourteen million views. The caption was trending worldwide: **#BillionaireGroomJiltsHaleHeiress #LittleGirlCrashesWedding**.

Every morning talk show had an emergency panel discussing the footage. Pundits dissected the moment Lucy threw the envelope, the look of terror on Victoria’s face, and Ethan’s immediate shielding of the child. But the Hale PR machine had not been idle during the night.

By 8:00 A.M., the narrative began to violently shift.

On major news networks, Arthur Hale appeared live from his Fifth Avenue penthouse, his silver hair immaculately styled, his expression a masterpiece of paternal grief and righteous indignation.

*"My daughter is devastated,"* Arthur told the anchor, his voice trembling with well-rehearsed emotion. *"Victoria has spent her life dedicated to philanthropy. What happened yesterday was a coordinated, malicious shakedown by an organized extortion ring that has stalked our family for over a decade. This woman, Olivia Bennett, has fabricated claims against Ethan Pierce for years. We believe the child is being used as human collateral by criminal elements to sabotage our upcoming multi-billion-dollar merger. We have already asked the FBI to intervene."*

Ethan watched the broadcast on the muted television in his study, a cold cup of black coffee untouched beside him.

Across the room, Claire Morrison was typing furiously on her laptop, her phone pressed between her ear and shoulder.

"The federal judge just accepted our motion for an expedited evidentiary hearing at 2:00 P.M. today," Claire said, shutting her phone with a snap. "Arthur is pulling out every stop, Ethan. He’s leaning on the U.S. Attorney’s office to seize Lucy under federal child welfare statutes before our DNA results can be certified."

"How long until the lab confirms the match?" Ethan asked, not taking his eyes off Arthur Hale’s lying face on the screen.

"Ten minutes," Claire replied. "Pathology at St. Jude’s ran a rush twenty-four-marker STR panel on your buccal swab and Lucy’s hair follicles. It’s a formality, Ethan. You know she’s yours."

"I knew the second she looked at me," Ethan said quietly.

A sharp buzz came from the estate's front gate intercom.

Ethan tapped the monitor on his desk.

The camera at the main entrance showed three black SUVs parked bumper-to-bumper across the driveway. Men in tactical windbreakers bearing the letters **CPS-SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS** and two marked State Police cruisers were blocking the gates.

"They're here," Claire said, rising to her feet, her face darkening. "They're attempting an administrative seizure before the two o'clock court hearing. If they get Lucy into state custody, Arthur can have her moved to an undisclosed facility under a protective seal. We’ll spend six months fighting through red tape just to see her."

"They aren't touching her," Ethan said, standing up and pulling on a dark charcoal suit jacket.

"Ethan, you cannot resist state troopers with badges," Claire warned, grabbing his arm. "If you assault an officer, you go to jail, and Arthur wins by default!"

"I’m not going to assault anyone, Claire," Ethan said smoothly, picking up the green journal and Victoria’s platinum keycard from the desk. "I’m going to give them a target they can't afford to ignore."

Ethan walked down the hallway to the master suite.

Lucy was sitting on the edge of her mother’s bed, holding a spoon of warm broth to Olivia’s lips. Olivia was conscious now, her eyes clear, though her skin was still terribly translucent.

When Ethan walked in, Olivia looked at him, her breath hitching. "Ethan... they're outside... I heard the sirens..."

"Nobody is taking Lucy, Liv," Ethan said, crouching down beside the bed so he was eye-level with both of them. He took Lucy’s small, broth-stained hand in his. "Lucy, do you trust me?"

The little girl looked at him. Her hazel eyes, so full of ancient sorrow hours ago, now carried a faint spark of defiance. "You came back for us. Mom said you would."

"I will never leave you again," Ethan said, his voice thick with emotion. "Now, I need you to listen very carefully. Martha is going to take you and your mom down to the wine cellar. There is a reinforced panic room behind the third rack. It has its own air supply, food, water, and satellite communication. Claire is going to stay with you. You lock that door from the inside, and you do not open it for anyone except me. Do you understand?"

"Where are you going?" Lucy asked, her grip tightening on his fingers.

"I’m going to finish the wedding," Ethan said with a dark, grim smile.

He kissed Olivia’s forehead—she closed her eyes, letting out a trembling sob—and then leaned down and kissed Lucy’s hair.

Two minutes later, Ethan walked out the front doors of his manor alone.

The rain had stopped, replaced by a cold, cutting wind that whipped through the bare branches of the oak trees. Ethan walked down the long, winding driveway toward the gates with his hands in his pockets, his posture relaxed, like a lord surveying his garden.

At the gates, a state trooper with a hand resting on his sidearm stepped forward, accompanied by a severe-looking woman in a brown trench coat holding a clipboard.

"Ethan Pierce?" the woman demanded through the iron bars. "I am Agent Miller with the Department of Child Protection. We have an administrative warrant for the immediate removal of Lucy Bennett."

"Good morning, Agent Miller," Ethan said smoothly, stopping three feet from the gate. "Do you have an enforcement order signed by Chief Justice Alvarez?"

"We have an administrative removal warrant signed by the county magistrate—"

"The county magistrate whose campaign was funded by the Hale Political Action Committee?" Ethan interrupted, tilting his head. "I’m afraid that warrant was vacated at 6:45 this morning by the Appellate Division. Claire Morrison sent the certified copy to your department director’s personal fax forty minutes ago."

The woman’s face tightened. She looked at the state trooper, who shifted his weight uncomfortably.

"Mr. Pierce, we are required to verify the physical safety of the minor—"

"The minor is currently with her mother and three board-certified physicians receiving medical treatment for heavy metal poisoning," Ethan said loudly, projecting his voice toward the dashcams of the state police cruisers. "A crime, I might add, that is currently being investigated by the State Attorney General’s Special Crimes Unit."

Before Agent Miller could speak, Ethan’s personal phone pinged in his pocket.

He pulled it out.

A message from Claire: **DNA RESULTS IN. 99.998% PATERNITY CONFIRMED. CERTIFIED COPIES SENT TO THE JUDGE AND THE PRESS.**

Ethan looked up from the screen, his face hardening into a mask of pure, merciless victory.

"You have five seconds to move your vehicles off my property line, gentlemen," Ethan said quietly. "Because if you don't, I will have the Sheriff’s Department arrest every single one of you for executing an invalid warrant on private property. And then I’m going to sue your department until your pension fund is completely dry."

The state trooper looked at Agent Miller. He didn't say a word. He turned around, got back into his cruiser, and slammed the door.

Ten seconds later, the three black SUVs slowly backed down the hill, their tires spitting gravel.

Ethan watched them disappear around the bend. Then, he turned and looked at his driver, who had just pulled the Maybach around from the garage.

"To the Lexington Private Bank," Ethan ordered. "It’s time to see what Arthur Hale has been hiding for eleven years."
