Chapter 9 - The Hunt for the Walnut Grand

The industrial district along the Cumberland River was shrouded in midnight fog. Dilapidated brick warehouses and rusting shipping containers loomed out of the darkness like iron monoliths. Rain dripped steadily from corrugated metal eaves, mixing with the oily sheen on the cracked asphalt.
Three black SUVs pulled into an alleyway fifty yards from Warehouse 14.
Inside the lead vehicle, Nathan checked the clip on his licensed sidearm, sliding it back into his shoulder holster beneath his dark wool coat. Beside him sat Claire, dressed in dark denim and a heavy jacket, her mother’s notebook clutched under her arm.
"Julian," Nathan spoke into his comm unit. "Are the Metro Police and federal marshals in position?"
*"Two minutes out, Nathan,"* Julian's voice crackled through the earpiece. *"Judge Holbrook signed the federal search warrant based on the fraudulent interstate wire transfers. But Kane’s private security is inside. Be careful."*
"We don't wait," Nathan said. "The cargo manifest shows the container is being sealed at midnight. If they crate that piano, they could damage the interior compartment."
Nathan turned to Claire, his hand clasping hers tightly. "You stay behind me until my men secure the floor."
"I’m staying right beside you," Claire said, her voice completely steady. "That piano belongs to my family."
Nathan looked at her for a beat, a faint, proud smile touching his lips. "All right. Let's finish this."
Four private security operatives, led by Nathan, moved silently toward the warehouse side door. With a muffled hydraulic crunch, the lock was breached, and the heavy metal door swung open.
The warehouse was vast, dimly lit by flickering sodium-vapor lamps hanging from high steel girders. Wooden crates, pallets of industrial machinery, and cargo netting cluttered the concrete floor.
At the far end of the bay, near an open loading dock where a semi-truck idle-rumbled, stood a wooden shipping crate surrounded by three men.
And standing next to the crate, holding a clipboard and a crowbar, were Marcus Kane and Denise Bennett.
Denise wore a fur-trimmed coat, pacing nervously. "Did the driver verify the port manifests in Savannah? Marcus, I don't like this. The police visited my house in Knoxville today."
"Shut up, Denise!" Kane snapped, his face haggard and venomous beneath the yellow light. "Once this instrument clears customs in Hamburg, Whitmore can file all the lawsuits he wants. Without the physical will inside this wood, Claire Bennett has zero standing to contest your fifty percent ownership. The land sale closes automatically by default of abandonment!"
"You're too late, Marcus," a cold, baritone voice echoed through the cavernous warehouse.
Kane and Denise froze.
Nathan stepped out of the shadows into the pool of yellow light, his hands resting casually at his sides, flanked by four armed operatives. Claire walked beside him, her head held high, her eyes fixed like lasers upon her stepmother.
Denise let out a strangled shriek, dropping her clipboard. "How did they find us?"
Kane reached inside his coat, his eyes wild with desperate fury. "Whitmore! You’re trespassing on private commercial property! My men will drop you where you stand!"
"Look behind you, Marcus," Nathan said smoothly.
The roar of multiple sirens suddenly shattered the night. Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the high frosted windows of the warehouse. The massive roll-up doors at the front of the building were rammed inward by two tactical police vehicles.
*"Metro Police! Federal Marshals! Drop your weapons and put your hands on your heads!"* a megaphone boomed.
Kane’s private guards immediately raised their hands, dropping their batons and sidearms onto the concrete floor. Kane stood frozen, his face draining of all color, the crowbar slipping from his fingers and clattering loudly against the concrete.
Denise backed away toward the idling truck, tears of pure hysteria streaming down her face. "This wasn't my idea! It was Kane! He planned it! He gave me the drugs for Robert’s medication! He promised me four million dollars!"
"You cowardly bitch!" Kane lunged toward her, but two federal marshals tackled him to the ground, slamming his face against the wet concrete and wrenching his arms behind his back.
*"Marcus Kane, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, conspiracy, and extortion!"*
Claire didn't look at Kane being handcuffed. She didn't look at Denise sobbing hysterically as a female officer clamped steel cuffs around her wrists.
Claire walked directly past the shouting officers, past the flashing lights, toward the center of the bay.
There, partially unbolted from its wooden transport cradle, sat the 1928 Steinway walnut grand piano.
Claire rested her trembling hands on the smooth, polished wood. The varnish was slightly scratched near the legs, but the magnificent instrument was intact. She ran her fingers across the fallboard, lifting it to reveal the ivory keys she had played since she was five years old.
Nathan walked up behind her, placing a comforting, steady hand on her shoulder. "Find it, Claire."
Claire knelt beside the right side of the piano’s undercarriage, reaching beneath the massive spruce sounding board where the bass strings converged. Her fingers searched the dark, narrow crevice between the pinblock and the inner rim—a secret compartment her father had shown her when she was a little girl, where he had once hidden her mother’s birthday notes.
Her fingertips brushed against a cold metal cylinder wrapped in oiled velvet.
Claire held her breath, gently easing the cylinder out of the hidden compartment.
She stood up, her hands shaking violently. With Nathan standing beside her, she unrolled the velvet to reveal a sealed brass tube. She unscrewed the cap and pulled out a thick parchment document stamped with the official seal of the Knox County Probate Registry.
At the top, in Dr. Robert Bennett’s clear, bold handwriting, were the words:
**LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF DR. ROBERT BENNETT.**
Claire turned to the second page, her eyes scanning the legal clauses:
*“Having uncovered the criminal financial fraud and infidelity of my second wife, Denise Bennett, I hereby revoke all prior testaments and codicils. I intentionally leave Denise Bennett zero dollars and zero assets from my estate. I bequeath one hundred percent of the Bennett family ridge, the practice assets, and all family trusts solely and entirely to my beloved daughter, Claire Bennett.”*
Appended to the back was a thumb drive containing audio recordings of Denise discussing the shell company transfers with Marcus Kane.
A ragged, beautiful sob broke from Claire’s lips. She pressed the paper against her chest, closing her eyes as hot, cleansing tears washed down her cheeks.
"He protected me," she whispered, her voice choked with emotion. "He made sure they couldn't steal it."
Nathan pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly against his chest while the sirens wailed and the criminals were dragged away into the night.
May you like
"It's over, Claire," Nathan murmured into her hair, his voice full of warmth and unshakeable pride. "You're going home."
