Chapter 8 - The Ghost of the Past

The calm did not last.

It never did in the high-stakes world of Seattle’s elite.

It was a crisp Sunday afternoon, and Claire was walking through the estate's sprawling rose gardens, enjoying the quiet chill of the autumn air, when a sleek, silver Mercedes pulled up outside the security gates.

Claire stopped by the wrought-iron fence, watching as a woman stepped out of the vehicle.

She was stunning in a terrifying, sculpted sort of way—high cheekbones, platinum-blonde hair pulled back into a severe chignon, and a cashmere trench coat that screamed European fashion house. Victoria Sterling. Arthur Sterling’s daughter, and, as Claire dimly recalled from the society gossip pages, Grant’s former fiancée of three years before the engagement mysteriously dissolved.

The security guard at the gate hesitated, recognizing Claire, and pressed the buzzer to swing the iron doors open.

Victoria marched up the paved pathway, her heels clicking sharply against the stone. She stopped a few feet from Claire, looking her up and down with an expression of profound, surgical disdain.

"So," Victoria said, her voice smooth, glacial, and dripping with condescension. "You’re the nurse. The one who wandered in off the bus and managed to trap Grant in a moment of emotional vulnerability."

Claire didn't flinch. She crossed her arms, holding her ground. "Good afternoon to you too, Victoria. It’s lovely to see that your father taught you such charming conversational skills."

Victoria’s eyes narrowed into hard little slits. "Grant doesn't marry nurses, darling. He dates them when he’s rebelling against his mother, he plays house with them in the country, but when the dust settles, a Hartwell marries within the circle. My father’s firm and Hartwell Enterprises are merging our logistics infrastructure next month. A union between our families was practically written in stone before you showed up playing Cinderella."

"Well," Claire said, a cool, unbothered smile touching her lips, "it sounds like your father's stones are about to crumble. Because last time I checked, Grant isn't interested in ancient history."

Victoria stepped closer, her face twisting with sudden, bitter anger. "You think you’ve won something? You think because he stood up for you at a ballroom gala that he’s going to throw away decades of corporate strategy for a girl who used to wipe bedpans? He’ll get bored of you, Claire. The moment the novelty wears off, you'll just be another discarded application."

"Is that right?"

A deep, velvet voice cut through the cool autumn air like a scythe.

Victoria spun around.

Grant was walking down the stone pathway from the main house. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket; his white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, and his sleeves were rolled up to his forearms, revealing the strong, corded muscles of his arms. His storm-gray eyes were terrifyingly dark.

"Grant," Victoria said, her expression shifting instantly into a practiced, smooth mask of wounded innocence. "I was just introducing myself to your... guest. I wanted to drop off some merger documents for your review since my father couldn't reach you."

Grant didn't stop until he was standing directly beside Claire. He didn't look at Victoria. He reached out, sliding his hand securely around Claire’s waist, pulling her flush against his side in a gesture of absolute, unbreakable possession.

Only then did he turn his gaze to Victoria.

"Leave the documents with the security guard at the gate, Victoria," Grant said, his voice flat, heavy, and completely devoid of warmth. "And if you ever step foot on this property again uninvited, I will terminate every single contract between Sterling Technologies and Hartwell Enterprises before the sun sets."

Victoria’s breath hitched. Her professional veneer cracked, revealing genuine shock and panic. "Grant, you can't be serious! That's a multi-million dollar partnership!"

"Try me," Grant said softly.

Without another word, Victoria turned on her heel, practically sprinting back toward her Mercedes, the engine roaring to life before the door was even fully closed.

Claire looked up at Grant, her chest tightening with a sudden, overwhelming rush of affection. "You didn't have to threaten her empire for me."

"It wasn't a threat," Grant said, looking down into her hazel eyes, his expression softening instantly into something fiercely tender. "It was a promise. Nothing and no one touches what's mine."

He leaned down and kissed her right there in the open autumn sunlight, sealing out the ghosts of the past once and for all.
