Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

Over the next three months, the transformation of Moretti Logistics was swift, absolute, and publicly celebrated.

With Salvatore Rossi gone and the corrupt port authorities exposed, Gabriel did what his father had never possessed the vision or courage to do: he began the systemic legitimization of the entire Moretti empire.

Illicit trucking corridors were restructured into legal, union-backed freight routes. The high-interest loan books acquired from Vance Rinaldi and his cohorts were completely dissolved; debts were forgiven, and the predatory enforcers were purged from the city payrolls. The syndicate’s vast shadow capital was poured into legitimate infrastructure, maritime technology, and urban redevelopment.

At the center of this new dawn was Paige Winslow.

She was no longer an administrative assistant. She was the newly appointed Creative Director of Moretti Global Enterprises, heading an in-house design and marketing firm that operated out of the thirty-ninth floor—just one flight of stairs below Gabriel’s office.

Her old sketchbooks had been rebound in Italian leather. Her architectural concepts were now being used to design the new green-energy logistics terminal at Bayonne.

On a bright Tuesday morning in March, Paige stepped out of the private elevator onto the administrative floor—the very bullpen where her journey had begun six months earlier.

The floor went dead silent.

Sylvia sat behind her manager's desk, her fingers frozen over her keyboard. The thirty clerks and junior accountants all looked up, staring in awed reverence at the woman entering the room.

Paige wore an impeccably tailored ivory pantsuit, her blonde hair falling in soft, confident waves over her shoulders. On her left ring finger sparkled a five-carat oval diamond set in platinum, surrounded by a halo of small, brilliant-cut emeralds.

She walked down the center aisle, her heels clicking with quiet authority against the linoleum.

She stopped at Sylvia’s desk.

Sylvia swallowed hard, her face draining of color. "M-Miss Winslow... I mean, Mrs... Miss Winslow. Good morning."

Paige smiled warmly, setting a manila folder on Sylvia’s desk.

"Good morning, Sylvia," Paige said smoothly. "These are the revised quarterly health benefits for the administrative staff. Mr. Moretti has approved a twenty percent salary increase across the entire clerical division, along with full tuition reimbursement for anyone pursuing an advanced degree."

Sylvia stared at the folder, then looked up at Paige with tears welling in her eyes. "Paige... after everything I said... after how I treated you..."

Paige leaned down slightly, her voice gentle. "Sylvia, life in this bullpen was about survival. I know what it’s like to be terrified of the shadows. But the shadows don't run this company anymore. Make sure the paperwork is filed by three o'clock."

"Yes, ma'am," Sylvia whispered, her voice cracking with profound gratitude. "Thank you."

Paige turned and walked back toward the private elevators. As the doors slid open, she didn't see an armed guard or a cold monolith.

Gabriel was waiting inside.

He was dressed in a dark charcoal three-piece suit, his overcoat unbuttoned, looking every inch the corporate king he had become. But the moment his gray eyes met hers, the coldness vanished, replaced by an unmistakable, radiant warmth.

"How did they take the news?" he asked as she stepped into the elevator beside him.

"Sylvia nearly cried," Paige smiled, leaning against his side. "I think you’ve officially ruined your reputation as a ruthless monster, Mr. Moretti."

Gabriel wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his side as the elevator began its smooth descent toward the private garage.

"My reputation is whatever you decide it is, Miss Winslow," he murmured, pressing a kiss to the crown of her head. "Are you ready? The transport from Ohio just arrived at the house."

Paige’s eyes lit up with pure joy. "Buster is here?"

May you like

"He arrived twenty minutes ago," Gabriel chuckled softly. "Nico reports that he has already claimed the living room rug and demanded three sausages from the chef."
