Chapter 8 - The Masks Fall Off

Thomas Lin sprang to his feet, his composure shattering. "Your Honor, this is an ambush! This is a gross violation of procedural due process! Any new evidence must be served on defense counsel forty-eight hours prior to—"
"Sit down, Mr. Lin," Judge Vance snapped, his tone shifting instantly. He broke the wax seal on the envelope Evelyn Reed had provided, pulling out a set of glossy color printouts and a certified affidavit. As the judge read, his eyebrows drew together into a deep, thunderous furrow.
"Bailiff," Judge Vance said, his voice deadly quiet. "Dim the courtroom lights and activate the monitor."
Arthur’s polished smile finally began to waver. He reached over, grabbing Thomas’s arm, his fingers digging into his brother’s sleeve. "Thomas, what is this? What do they have?"
"Be quiet," Thomas hissed under his breath.
The large flat-screen monitor mounted on the courtroom wall flickered to life. The footage was in stunning 4K resolution, captured from Mrs. Gable’s side-angle camera. It showed our brightly lit formal study.
On the screen, Arthur was seen walking over to the fireplace mantle, taking down the heavy brass candleholder, and handing it directly to Chloe. The courtroom speakers crackled, and then Arthur’s voice filled the room, crystalline and horrifying:
“Make sure it’s the right hand. If she can’t take the test, the scholarship lapses, and the trust stays intact. Just make it look like a struggle. I’ll handle the police if anyone calls.”
Chloe took the weapon, testing its weight in her hands, her face twisted in a cold sneer. “She always thought she was better than me because of Mom’s money. I’m going to make sure she never touches a piano or a test again.”
The camera then showed the double doors flying open, me running down the hall toward the front entrance, Chloe pursuing me, and Arthur walking slowly behind, checking his wristwatch with utter indifference.
The courtroom fell into a silence so absolute you could hear the second hand ticking on the wall clock.
Chloe let out a strangled, animalistic gasp and buried her face in her hands. Arthur sat entirely frozen, his face draining of all color until he looked like a corpse in a tailored suit.
"Furthermore, Your Honor," Evelyn Reed said, her voice cutting through the silence like a scalpel, "the forensic audit of Sarah Lin’s estate accounts reveals that Arthur Lin has systematically embezzled over one hundred and eighty thousand dollars from Maya Lin’s educational trust over the last three years to fund Chloe Lin’s private equestrian lessons and delinquent property taxes on his luxury vehicles. He knew that when Maya turned eighteen and matriculated at Stanford, the trust required an independent fiduciary accounting. He staged this assault to incapacitate her, force an academic failure, and trigger the forfeiture clause."
"That's a lie!" Arthur roared, slamming his palms down on the defense table as he lunged to his feet. "She's an ungrateful, rebellious brat! Everything I did was to keep this family together! Thomas, do something! Call the chief!"
"Arthur, shut your mouth!" Thomas yelled, physically shoving his brother back into his chair, realizing too late that his own professional career was now hanging by a thread.
Judge Vance slowly took off his reading glasses. The familiarity and warmth he usually showed Thomas Lin had vanished completely. In its place was the raw, cold disgust of a veteran jurist looking at monsters.
"In my thirty-two years on the bench," Judge Vance whispered, his voice trembling with controlled fury, "I have rarely witnessed such grotesque depravity masquerading as parental care."
He banged his gavel down with a crack that sounded like a gunshot.
"Custody of Maya Lin is immediately terminated from Arthur Lin and placed under the temporary guardianship of the State Department of Child and Family Services, with physical placement authorized at the residence of her certified educator, Mr. Robert Harrison, pending final review. Bail for Arthur Lin is revoked; he will be remanded to the county jail without bond on charges of felony conspiracy, aggravated assault, child endangerment, and grand larceny."
Judge Vance turned his blazing gaze upon Chloe.
"As for Chloe Lin: you are remanded to the juvenile justice center without bail pending formal arraignment as an adult for felony assault with a deadly weapon."
"Dad! Dad, help me!" Chloe screamed as two female bailiffs moved in behind her, grabbing her wrists and wrenching her arms behind her back. The designer handbag fell to the floor, spilling makeup and loose cash across the carpet. "You told me they wouldn't catch us! You told me it was my turn!"
Arthur didn't even look at her. As the handcuffs clicked around his wrists, his eyes remained locked on me—wide, bloodshot, and filled with a venomous hatred.
"You ruined everything, Maya," he snarled through clenched teeth as the officers dragged him toward the side holding cell. "You won't survive out there alone! You're nothing without my name!"
May you like
I didn't flinch. I sat upright in my wheelchair, resting my plastered arm on the pillow, and looked my father dead in the eye.
"Your name is an arrest record now, Dad," I said quietly. "Mine is on the Stanford roster."
