Chapter 5 - The Vault in the Shadow

"She’s right about one thing," Mason spoke up, his voice calm, chillingly calculated. He pulled a sleek black tablet from his backpack and tapped the screen twice. "The acquisition closes at dawn. But she forgot who built the infrastructure that makes Vance Logistics worth buying in the first place."

Victoria paused, her eyes darting to Mason’s hands. "What are you talking about?"

"Our mother didn't just hold shares, Victoria," Mason said, looking up with a look of pure defiance. "Mom was the lead architect who wrote the proprietary logistics software that routes ninety percent of the shipping containers along the Eastern Seaboard. And she didn't leave the encryption keys in a safety deposit box. She left them in our bloodline."

Suddenly, the security lights above the main gate flickered violently. A sharp digital chime echoed from the intercom box beside the guard booth. The heavy iron gates gave a mechanical groan, unlocked automatically, and began to slide open on their tracks.

The two security guards stared at their control console in utter bewilderment. "Ma'am! The master override just triggered from an administrative bypass!"

"Shut it down!" Robert screamed, panicking. "Cut the power to the perimeter!"

"They can't," Noah said, stepping past the opening gates into the inner courtyard. "The moment the clock struck midnight and we turned eighteen, the secondary fail-safe Evelyn programmed went live. Every server in this building is currently reading Mason and me as primary administrative trustees. You locked the doors from the outside, Victoria. But Mom gave us the keys to the foundation."

Victoria’s mask of supreme confidence shattered completely. "Grab them!" she ordered the private guards, her voice losing its aristocratic veneer. "Get them off the premises right now!"

The two guards hesitated. They looked at Victoria, then at the twins, then down at their own digital badges, which were suddenly flashing bright red with corporate suspension warnings.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you," I warned the guards, stepping squarely into the center of the courtyard. "You're paid by Vance Logistics, not Victoria Sterling's personal bank account. And as of sixty seconds ago, your payroll is being authorized by Evelyn Sterling's lawful heirs. Touch either of them, and your pensions disappear before sunrise."

The guards looked at each other, took one synchronized step backward, and lowered their heads.

"Useless cowards!" Robert shrieked, lunging forward himself to grab Mason’s arm.

Before Robert’s fingers could touch Mason’s jacket, Mason sidestepped, caught Robert’s wrist in a firm, practiced grip, and twisted it down, forcing the older man to his knees in the puddles.

"Don't touch me, Uncle Robert," Mason said quietly, staring down at him with utter disgust. "You haven't earned the right to stand in our way."
