Chapter 10 - A New Song

Two weeks later, the Willow Creek Elementary gymnasium was filled with music once again—not for a school dance this time, but for the grand reopening ceremony of the community center and the newly named Emma Reed Arts Wing.

String lights crisscrossed overhead, glowing warm and golden against the freshly painted walls. Folding tables were covered in white cloths, piled high with donated pastries from the downtown bakery.

Emma Reed stood near the center of the wooden stage, wearing a brand-new pale blue dress—one that fit her perfectly, with an even hem and brand-new white shoes that didn't pinch her toes at all.

Her mother stood in the front row, watching with a camera in hand, laughing as the school band struggled through an enthusiastic, if slightly out-of-tune, rendition of a pop song.

In the back row, standing quietly by the double doors, was Daniel Mercer. He wore a simple dark jacket, his hands resting in his pockets, watching the children run and play across the polished floor.

He had planned to drop off the final inspection papers and leave before the ceremony started. He hated crowds. He hated attention.

Before he could turn toward the exit, a small pair of white shoes stopped right in front of him.

Daniel looked down.

Emma Reed stood there, holding a paper wristband out toward him. It wasn't tight or jagged anymore; it was decorated with little hand-drawn stars in purple and gold crayon.

"You're standing by the door again," Emma observed, tilting her head up with a critical, knowing eye.

Daniel smiled—a real, unreserved smile that seemed to shed twenty years of heavy armor from his shoulders. "I'm terrible at escaping, apparently."

"Well, that's good," Emma said, grabbing the edge of his jacket sleeve with zero hesitation. "Because the music is starting, and I happen to know you need practice."

Daniel looked past her toward the stage, then down at the little girl who had changed the trajectory of his entire life simply by speaking her truth in an empty gymnasium.

"Is that so?" Daniel asked softly.

May you like

"Yes," Emma declared, tugging gently on his sleeve. "And this time, no stepping on my toes."

Daniel surrendered. He let out a low, genuine laugh, hooked his hands into his pockets, and allowed himself to be led out onto the crowded floor, right into the middle of the music, where the past was finally laid to rest, and the future was just beginning to dance.
