Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

The courtroom erupted into a chaotic murmur before Judge Harrison slammed his heavy wooden gavel down once, twice, three times.

*Bang! Bang! Bang!*

"Silence!" the judge roared, scanning the gallery with eyes like chips of flint. "One more outburst from anyone in this room and I will clear the gallery for contempt of court!"

The murmurs died instantly, replaced by a suffocating, suffocating tension.

Julian Vance was sweating profusely now. He grabbed his briefcase and stepped back from the podium, physically distancing himself from Vanessa as if her perjury were contagious.

"Your Honor," Vance stammered, raising a trembling hand. "As officers of the court, my firm and I had no knowledge—I repeat, absolutely no knowledge—of any fraudulent misrepresentations regarding paternity or asset concealment. We were operating entirely upon the sworn statements provided by the Petitioner."

Judge Harrison didn't even look at Vance. His gaze remained locked on Vanessa, who was now trembling so violently in her designer chair that her teeth were visibly chattering.

"Mrs. Harland," Judge Harrison said, his voice cold enough to freeze boiling water. "You signed a verified legal document under oath, swearing that the statements contained therein were true and correct under penalty of perjury. Do you care to explain why my bailiff is currently holding a DNA report and resort logs proving that the biological father of your unborn child is not your husband, nor some anonymous tourist from Mexico... but is, in fact, a man sitting ten feet away from you in this very courtroom?"

Vanessa opened her mouth, closed it, and then burst into hysterical, ragged sobs.

In the gallery, Shay Collins stood up so fast her chair screeched loudly against the hardwood floor. Her face was bloodless, her eyes wide with shock and absolute fury. She turned her head slowly to the side, looking at the man sitting right beside her.

"Travis," Shay whispered, the word tearing out of her throat like broken glass. "Travis... what is she talking about?"

Travis Collins buried his face in his hands, groaning softly, his shoulders shaking as the entire house of cards collapsed in a single, devastating moment.

"Shay, wait, let me explain..." Travis choked out, turning toward his wife with a desperate, pleading look.

"Explain what?!" Shay screamed, her voice echoing off the high courtroom ceiling. "Explain how you went on a 'fishing trip' to Lake Okeechobee at the exact same time Vanessa was in Tulum?! Explain why her baby belongs to *you*?!"

The gallery exploded into renewed murmurs and gasps. Bailiffs immediately rushed down the aisle, flanking the row where Shay and Travis sat to prevent a physical brawl.

I remained sitting quietly in the back of the gallery, watching the carnage unfold. I didn't smile. I didn't gloat. I simply observed the destruction with the detached satisfaction of a master logger watching a rotted, hollow oak finally crash to the forest floor under its own weight.

Up at the bench, Judge Harrison didn't look angry anymore. He looked disgusted.

"This court," Judge Harrison declared, his voice echoing with absolute authority, "will not be used as an instrument of extortion, fraud, and calculated perjury. The Petitioner’s motion for a temporary injunction, corporate restructuring, and spousal support is hereby denied with prejudice."

He picked up a red stamp and slammed it down onto the paperwork.

*DENIED.*

"Furthermore," Judge Harrison continued, locking his eyes on Vanessa, who was now sobbing uncontrollably into her hands, "this matter is referred immediately to the District Attorney's office for criminal investigation into felony perjury and attempted grand larceny by deception. As for counsel fees, Mrs. Harland and any co-conspirators will be held jointly and severally liable for all legal expenses incurred by the Respondent in defending against this fraudulent action."

Judge Harrison slammed the gavel down one final time.

"Court is adjourned."

Thirty minutes later, the courtroom had emptied out.

Vanessa was sitting alone at the defense table, her lawyer having abandoned her entirely, rushing down the hall to distance his firm from the wreckage. She looked smaller, defeated, stripped of the arrogant armor she had worn into the building.

I walked slowly down the center aisle, my work boots clicking rhythmically against the floor.

I stopped a few feet from the table.

Vanessa looked up, her mascara running in dark streaks down her pale cheeks. Her lips trembled. "Wade... please. I messed up. It was a mistake. We can fix this—"

"You wanted Harland Tree and Land, Vanessa," I interrupted quietly, my voice entirely devoid of emotion. "You wanted my company, my life, my hard work. You thought I was stupid. You thought because I worked with my hands, I wouldn't see the grain of what you were doing."

"Wade..." she sobbed, reaching out a trembling hand toward my sleeve.

I stepped back, out of her reach.

"The divorce will proceed," I said, my voice steady and cold. "Not on your terms, but on mine. You will sign a quitclaim relinquishing any and all claims to my business, my assets, and my property. In exchange, I won't personally press civil fraud charges that would guarantee you spend the next five to ten years in a state penitentiary while pregnant."

Vanessa stared at me, realizing the absolute abyss of her defeat. She had lost everything: her husband, her reputation, her financial security, and the man she had committed adultery with.

"And Travis?" she whispered tearfully. "What about Travis?"

"That," I said, turning toward the exit, "is between you, Shay, and whatever kind of hell Travis is walking home to right now."
