Chapter 29 - The Sovereign Dawn

The iron gates gave way with an explosive crash of shearing bolts and splintering metal.

The Volvo plunged into the subterranean service tunnel beneath the Capitol rotunda, tires screeching against smooth concrete before coming to a violent, shuddering stop against the hydraulic loading dock buffers.

"Out! Out!" David yelled, kicking his door open and pulling me with him into the fluorescent glare of the service corridor.

Above us, the bells of the Capitol clock tower began to chime the hour.

*Ten o’clock.*

"Move!" Arthur roared, running with a fierce, impossible strength that defied his broken body, his cane striking the concrete floor like a war drum.

We burst through the double security doors of the State Archives division just as two Capitol security officers drew their sidearms, startled by the sound of our shattered entrance.

"Put the weapons down!" Arthur’s voice boomed through the high-vaulted room with the authority of an Old Testament prophet. He slammed the Supreme Court envelope onto the mahogany reception counter. "I am Arthur Sterling, legal executor of the Eleanor Vance Estate! We are invoking Section Nine of the Sovereign Lands Act of nineteen-sixty-two! Summon the State Archivist immediately!"

The lead officer looked at Arthur’s bloodied face, looked at the embossed gold seal on the parchment, and instantly reached for the red telephone on his desk.

Down the long marble corridor behind us, the heavy security fire doors were suddenly kicked open.

Marcus Croft stepped into the light.

He was dressed in an impeccable charcoal three-piece suit, his silver hair neatly combed, flanked by three men in dark tactical jackets whose hands were buried inside their waistbands. His face was a mask of cold, aristocratic fury.

"It's over, Arthur," Croft said, his voice echoing smoothly across the polished stone floor. "Judge Harrison signed the default probate ruling sixty seconds ago. The Vance corridor has been transferred to Croft Continental Timber. You are trespassing on state property with illegal firearms. Officers, arrest these people."

The Capitol police officers looked between Croft and Arthur, completely frozen by the clash of titan authorities.

I stepped forward.

I didn't hide behind David. I didn't hide behind my father. I stood in the center of the hall, the leather ledger held high in my left hand, the master brass key gleaming in my right.

"The probate court has no jurisdiction, Marcus," I said, my voice steady, ringing through the rotunda with an absolute, terrifying clarity that made Croft’s eyes narrow in sudden, violent shock. "My mother did not die in Switzerland. She died three years ago as a sovereign ward of the federal government. And this key does not belong to a private corporation."

The heavy mahogany doors behind the counter clicked open.

The Chief Archivist of the State of Washington, flanked by two assistant attorneys general carrying armloads of state registers, stepped into the light.

"She is correct, Mr. Croft," the Archivist said, his glasses perched low on his nose as he examined the duplicate serial numbers on Arthur’s parchment against the state record books. "This office received an emergency federal stay from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals four minutes ago. The Vance land grant is protected under federal wilderness covenants. Any transfer executed by a municipal probate judge is null, void, and criminally fraudulent."

Croft’s face drained of all color. His hands clenched into white-knuckled fists at his sides.

"This isn't over," Croft hissed, his eyes burning into mine with murderous hatred. "You have no idea what forces are invested in that corridor, Claire. You cannot protect ninety thousand acres of wilderness with a piece of paper."

"She won't have to," Vivian said, stepping forward beside me, her bruised face smiling with pure triumph as two dozen armed Washington State Troopers rounded the corner behind Croft, their weapons drawn and leveled at his security detail. "Because the cryptographic key I took from your jet just delivered your private money-laundering ledgers to the Department of Justice. Turn around, Marcus. Put your hands behind your back."
