Chapter 30 - The Open Horizon

A cold gust of wind swept across the marble floor, carrying the sharp, clean scent of the North Sea and the distant chime of the midnight harbor bells echoing across the Scottish coast.

I turned around, holding the wooden shuttle in my hand, my heart skipping a beat as I looked toward the darkened entryway.

Standing in the doorway, framed by the pale, ethereal glow of the moonlight and the rolling Highland fog, was a tall, elegant figure cloaked in dark velvet. The silhouette was unmistakable, yet entirely unexpected—someone whose name hadn't been spoken in the Vance family ledgers for over thirty years. Someone who was supposed to be dead.

The figure stepped forward into the amber glow of the dying peat fire, lowering the velvet hood to reveal a face bearing the exact, unmistakable striking features of my grandmother Eleanor, looking not a day older than the portraits on the library wall.

"You took your time getting here, Clara," the mysterious woman said, her voice a low, melodic purr that seemed to vibrate through the ancient stones of the rotunda. "I’ve been waiting half a century for someone brave enough to finish the pattern."

Before I could speak, before I could call out for David or Arthur, the woman reached into her pocket and pulled out a second spool of glowing, iridescent thread—this one spun from pure, midnight blue silk—and tossed it across the marble floor toward my feet.

The blue spool rolled across the stone and stopped right beside the tip of my shoe, spinning slowly in a circle, casting a strange, luminescent glow against the dark floor.

Outside, the wind howled across the North Sea, and far off in the distance, the first rays of dawn began to paint the horizon in shades of gold, crimson, and impossible blue.

I looked down at the blue thread. Then I looked up at the stranger in the doorway. And finally, I looked back at the massive, unfinished loom waiting in the heart of the ancient hall.

The game wasn't over. In fact... the true masterpiece was only just beginning.
