Chapter 5 - The Audit on Market Street

By 9:00 AM on Monday morning, the news of the Holloway wedding had shattered the business establishment of Western North Carolina.

“MUNICIPAL BOND CHAIR GORDON HOLLOWAY ACCUSED OF $300K TRUST FRAUD & EXTORTION AT DAUGHTER’S WEDDING; COUNTY COMMISSION ORDERS IMMEDIATE STRUCTURAL AUDIT.”“HOLLOWAY CONSTRUCTION SUSPENDED FROM BLUE RIDGE MEDICAL EXPANSION PENDING ETHICS REVIEW.”

Inside the thirty-eighth-floor executive conference room of Voss Timber & Logistics in downtown Asheville, the morning sun broke over the Blue Ridge peaks in a blinding, dazzling expanse of liquid gold and slate blue.

I sat at the massive black walnut table, wearing an impeccably tailored navy wool skirt suit, my dark hair swept up into an austere, elegant chignon, holding an open leather portfolio stamped with the gold seal of the North Carolina State Licensing Board for General Contractors.

Beside me sat Callum, wearing his charcoal three-piece suit, his posture straight, radiating that calm, sovereign authority that made corporate directors lower their voices in hallways.

And sitting across from us were Judge Evelyn Harrison, Senior Assistant Attorney General Marcus Vance, and two forensic investigators from the State Auditor’s Office.

"The audit is certified, Mrs. Voss," Marcus Vance said, sliding a sixty-page legal docket across the table toward me with a respectful nod.

"Gordon Holloway did not use personal savings to pay the three hundred thousand dollars to Julian Vance five years ago.

He siphoned the funds directly from the municipal contingency escrow for the Blue Ridge Medical Pavilion—funds that had been underwritten by the taxpayers of Buncombe County."

Judge Harrison adjusted her reading glasses, looking down at the balance sheet with cold, clinical disgust.

"Gordon forged the signature of the site engineering inspector—Julian Vance—to clear the draw request forty-eight hours before Julian left town," Judge Harrison stated.

"Julian’s private journals, authenticated by Callum, explicitly document that Julian refused to approve the substandard concrete pilings on the north foundation wall. Gordon used the three hundred thousand dollars as both a bribe to silence a whistleblower and an extortion hammer to drive him away from his pregnant daughter."

I closed my eyes, leaning back into my leather chair, letting out a long, shuddering breath that felt like thirty years of heavy chains finally snapping from my limbs.

"And the foundation on the medical pavilion, Judge Harrison?" I asked quietly.

"The state engineering task force inspected the pilings yesterday morning, Marie," Callum replied, reaching across the table to take my hand in an iron, loving grip.

"The concrete had cracked by two inches. The entire north wing was thirty days away from a catastrophic structural failure.

Julian’s notes saved three hundred hospital beds from collapsing into the river basin.

Your late partner... was an absolute hero."

Marcus Vance stood up, closing his briefcase with a sharp, resonant clack.

"The Buncombe County Grand Jury returned seven felony indictments against Gordon Holloway and Keaton Holloway thirty minutes ago," Marcus announced.
