Chapter 3 - Voices Through the Vent

By 3:00 AM, the St. Regis had become a fortified camp.
Julian Croft had mobilized the best private security detail money could buy, stationing two guards outside the private executive suite on the fourth floor where Caleb was finally sleeping. The boy had collapsed from sheer exhaustion, curled up beneath a heavy down comforter, clutching a stuffed bear the night manager had retrieved from the hotel gift shop.
I stood by the window, staring out at the rain-slicked streets of New York. I had washed the blood from my skin. I had discarded the ruined silk robe and was now wearing a pair of dark trousers and a cashmere sweater Julian’s assistant had brought up from the concierge boutique.
My wedding band sat on the glass coffee table behind me. A platinum circle with five baguette-cut diamonds. An exquisite cage.
A soft knock came at the door. Julian stepped inside, carrying two black folders.
“The precinct captain just called,” Julian said quietly, closing the door behind him. “Scott has retained counsel. Marcus Albright.”
I turned, my jaw clenching. “Albright? The corporate shark who defended the Mercer family in their offshore embezzlement case?”
“The very same. Albright arrived at the station thirty minutes ago demanding Scott’s immediate release, citing unlawful detention by hotel security and claiming Scott was the victim of a domestic ambush orchestrated by you.”
“A domestic ambush?” I let out a harsh, incredulous laugh. “There was an unregistered six-year-old under the bed! A bleeding woman in my bathroom!”
“Albright is good, Claire. Ruthless, but good. He’s already framing the narrative for the press. He claims Allison is a mentally unstable former employee of Vance Logistics who broke into your suite to extort Scott, and that you—overwhelmed by paranoia—panicked and falsely accused your husband. Scott is playing the devastated, loyal partner who was merely trying to manage an impossible, tragic crisis to spare your feelings on your wedding night.”
“And Caleb?”
“Scott’s lawyer claims the boy was coached by Allison. Scott is denying Caleb is his biological son.”
A cold chill ran down my spine. “He’s denying his own child?”
“To protect the fraud charge, yes. If Scott admits Caleb is his, it proves premeditation and establishes the personal conspiracy between him and Allison. If Caleb is just 'a stranger's child,' the entire affair looks like a bizarre third-party home invasion rather than a corporate coup.”
I walked over to the bed where Caleb lay sleeping. His little thumb was tucked into his mouth. He looked so vulnerable, so entirely discarded by the two people who were supposed to protect him from the world.
“He discarded his own son like a piece of garbage just to save his defense,” I whispered, my heart aching with a fierce, protective ache I hadn't expected to feel. “Where is Allison?”
“Still at County General, guarded by two transit officers. But here is the problem, Claire: Albright filed an emergency ex-parte motion with Judge Callahan twenty minutes ago. Callahan is a judge whose campaign Scott’s firm contributed to heavily last fall.”
“What does the motion demand?”
“Immediate surrender of the child to Child Protective Services under city jurisdiction, and an emergency gag order against you, barring you from freezing Vance Logistics corporate accounts or accessing the safe deposit boxes until a full judicial review on Tuesday.”
“They’re trying to drain the accounts before the banks open on Monday,” I said instantly.
“Yes. But Albright didn't count on one thing.” Julian smiled for the first time, a sharp, predatory smile that revealed why my grandfather had kept him on retainer for twenty years. “Your suite wasn’t just an ordinary penthouse, Claire. The St. Regis executive suites were upgraded with acoustic structural sensors last summer during the diplomatic summit. The ventilation shafts are hard-wired with environmental monitoring microphones.”
I stared at him. “You recorded the suite?”
“The hotel's system records audio spikes above eighty decibels for safety compliance during foreign dignitary visits. When the porcelain smashed, when Allison screamed, and when Scott threatened you... the system logged every single syllable directly into the hotel's encrypted mainframe.”
“Does Albright know?”
“Not yet. He thinks he’s walking into court on Monday with a classic 'he-said, she-said' domestic dispute between a wealthy heiress and her blindsided husband.”
“I’m not waiting until Monday,” I said, stepping toward the desk. “The wedding brunch is at eleven o'clock this morning in the Grand Ballroom downstairs. Two hundred and fifty of New York’s most prominent investors, philanthropists, and media executives are attending. Scott’s entire network. My family’s partners.”
Julian’s eyes gleamed with sudden understanding. “Claire... what are you planning?”
May you like
“Scott wanted a performance,” I said, looking down at my bare ring finger. “He wanted the press. He wanted the Vance name. Let’s give him the wedding reception he actually paid for.”
