Chapter 9 - The New Skyline

Friday evening brought the official launch of the newly formed Vance-Mercer Global Network.
The celebration was held at the Chicago Cultural Center, beneath the majestic stained-glass Tiffany dome. The room was packed with the city’s true royalty: enterprise founders, union leaders, governors, federal judges, and international trade delegates.
The atmosphere was electric. There was no tension, no whispers of scandal—only genuine admiration for the woman who had executed the cleanest corporate takeover in modern Midwestern history.
I stood on the mezzanine balcony overlooking the grand ballroom, wearing an emerald-green satin gown that swept gracefully against the marble floor. In my hand was a flute of vintage champagne.
Richard Mercer walked up beside me, leaning against the intricately carved balustrade.
"The markets closed thirty minutes ago, Eleanor," Richard said, a proud smile warming his features. "Vance-Mercer stock closed up fourteen percent. Our new contract with the Port of Long Beach has officially been ratified. You’ve done what no one in Chicago thought possible."
"We did it, Richard," I said, raising my glass toward his. "Thank you for believing in me when I was still hiding behind Dominic’s shadow."
"A diamond doesn't stop being valuable just because it’s buried under dirt, Eleanor," Richard answered, clinking his glass against mine. "You just needed someone to clear away the rubble."
As the orchestra began playing a triumphant symphony below, Governor Callahan stepped to the central podium to introduce me as the keynote speaker. The crowd began to turn their faces toward the balcony, applauding with thunderous enthusiasm.

I took a deep breath, savoring the crisp, sweet air of genuine freedom. I had spent eight years building another man’s throne, but tonight, I was finally claiming my own.
