Chapter 3 - The Viper's Last Stand

The morning light broke over the Atlantic in pale streaks of silver and blue, but inside the private coastal residence, the atmosphere was charged with the quiet hum of a war room. Arthur’s team had already set up monitors across the dining area, screens flickering with live news broadcasts, financial wire reports, and security feeds from the Callahan Logistics headquarters in Chicago.
On the main screen, the headline flashed in glaring red letters: *BILLIONAIRE LOGISTICS HEIR ARRESTED IN MASSIVE FRAUD AND EMBEZZLEMENT SCHEME.*
Beneath the banner was a freeze-frame of Grant, his custom Italian suit rumpled, his hair unkempt, and his wrists locked in steel cuffs as federal agents guided his head down into the back of an unmarked black SUV. His face was twisted in a snarl of utter disbelief and rage. Beside him in a separate broadcast box was Vanessa, caught by paparazzi outside our former penthouse clutching a designer trench coat over her face, sobbing as reporters shouted questions about offshore shell accounts and stolen maritime software.
"The federal judge refused his preliminary request for bail this morning," Arthur said, placing a steaming mug of herbal tea in front of me. "His passport is seized. The Department of Justice has flagged him as an extreme flight risk because of the private jet he chartered under a Cayman LLC three days ago."
I wrapped my fingers around the warm porcelain, looking down at the quiet swell of my stomach. Little kicks fluttered against my palm. "He won't stay down easily, Arthur. Grant has spent his entire life believing that rules are suggestions for lesser people. He will try to find a back door."
"There are no back doors left in the Callahan accounts," Julian Croft said as he walked into the room. Julian, the brilliant software architect my husband had systematically robbed, looked years younger than he had when I first reached out to him six months ago. The hollow look in his eyes had been replaced by fierce determination. "I spent the entire night locking down the server architecture. Every line of maritime routing code he tried to patent under his mistress's dummy corporation has been reclaimed. Grant doesn't just lack money, Mara—he has no leverage."
Before Arthur could reply, his secure phone vibrated against the mahogany table. He glanced at the caller ID, his silver eyebrows drawing together. He put the call on speaker.
"Arthur? It’s Detective Miller with the Cook County financial division," a crisp voice came through. "We have a complication. Grant Callahan just managed to post a temporary surety bond."

I froze. "How? All his domestic and offshore accounts were frozen by federal injunction."
"Not his accounts," Detective Miller replied grimly. "An anonymous private equity firm based out of Zurich posted a five-million-dollar cash guarantee through a local proxy thirty minutes ago. He’s walking out of central holding as we speak. Mara, he has a strict restraining order, but you need to keep your security perimeter on absolute lockdown. A man stripped of his empire and his pride is at his most dangerous."
