Chapter 6 - Brooke's Counter-Strike & The Julian Connection

While Dominic sat in a federal holding cell and Olivia wandered between cheap motels in the outer suburbs, Brooke Montgomery was not ready to surrender without a fight.
She was eight months pregnant, her reputation in tatters, but her instincts were honed from years of corporate grifting. Sitting in the sterile, soundproofed office of a private consultation suite in downtown Milwaukee, Brooke faced Julian Graves across a low glass coffee table.
Julian Graves was sixty-two years old, with sharp, hawk-like features, silver hair cut with military precision, and cold blue eyes that had seen hundreds of competitors crushed beneath his corporate acquisitions. He was sipping black coffee, completely unbothered by the media firestorm that had erupted around Dominic’s wedding.
"You failed, Brooke," Julian said smoothly, not an ounce of warmth in his voice. "The objective was simple: secure the Sinclair equity through the marriage contract before Dominic’s fraud was discovered. Instead, you let Clara Sinclair walk into the sanctuary and expose the entire operation before you even signed the marriage register."
"I didn't know Dominic had a vasectomy!" Brooke hissed, leaning forward, her face flushed with anger. "How the hell was I supposed to predict that an insecure idiot like Dominic Vance had himself sterilized in Switzerland? That wasn't in your intelligence reports, Julian!"
"It was your job to manage him," Julian replied, setting his cup down. "You were paid one point two million dollars over eighteen months to handle him. Now, federal prosecutors are subpoenaing the financial transfers between my shell companies and your offshore account. You are no longer an asset, Brooke. You are a liability."
Brooke’s eyes flashed with venom. She reached into her handbag and pulled out a sleek, encrypted flash drive, placing it heavily onto the glass table between them.
"If you abandon me now, Julian, you go down with Dominic," Brooke whispered.
Julian’s eyes narrowed slightly. "Are you threatening me?"
"That drive contains audio recordings of every conversation we had in your penthouse over the last two years," Brooke said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, calculated rhythm. "Including the conversation where you instructed me to alter the Phase II trial data for Sinclair’s synthetic enzyme delivery mechanism to make their stock drop so Graves BioTech could launch a hostile takeover. That’s corporate espionage, Julian. That’s ten to fifteen years in federal prison."
Julian didn't flinch, but the muscle in his left jaw twitched once.
"What do you want, Brooke?"
"Ten million dollars," Brooke said without hesitation. "A private chartered flight to Zurich tonight. And a guaranteed non-disclosure settlement protecting me from civil litigation from Graves BioTech. You give me that, and I give you the master encryption key. You leave me to face Clara Sinclair and the federal marshals alone, and I walk into the United States Attorney’s office within the hour."
Julian looked at her for a long, heavy moment. Then, a thin, patronizing smile spread across his lips.
"You really are a survivor, Brooke. Very well. The funds will be transferred to your Zurich repository by 5:00 PM. The plane is at Midway Airport, Hangar Four. Bring the drive there. We will execute the exchange before your departure."
Brooke smiled, feeling the familiar rush of triumph. She believed she had outsmarted the master.
Two hours later, Brooke pulled her rented sedan into the private executive hangar at Midway Airport. The rain had turned into a steady, freezing mist. Across the tarmac, a Gulfstream G650 stood with its engines cold, the cabin lights dark.
Brooke stepped out of the car, clutching her handbag tightly against her belly. The chill wind whipped through her light coat as she walked toward the hangar’s open bay doors.
"Julian?" she called out, her voice echoing against the corrugated steel walls. "I'm here."
From the shadows near the rear of the hangar, a figure stepped forward.
It wasn't Julian Graves.
It was Leo Sinclair, wearing an impeccably tailored cashmere overcoat, flanked by two armed federal prosecutors and three special agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Brooke gasped, taking two frantic steps backward, but behind her, two unmarked government sedans pulled up, blocking the hangar entrance, their blue and red emergency lights illuminating the misty darkness.
"Julian sold you out forty-five minutes ago, Brooke," Leo said, his voice entirely calm as he walked forward, hands buried casually in his coat pockets. "Did you really think a billionaire defense contractor would risk an indictment for corporate espionage over an assistant he used to run an industrial sabotage scheme?"
"No..." Brooke breathed, clutching her stomach. "No! I have an agreement with him! He promised me the transfer!"
"Julian signed a non-prosecution cooperation agreement with the Justice Department at three o'clock," an assistant U.S. attorney stepped forward, holding a tablet. "In exchange for immunity regarding the Sinclair takeover attempt, he provided the government with the complete financial records of Montgomery Holdings LLC—including your falsified tax returns, your wire fraud logs, and the paternity acknowledgment he signed three months ago."
Brooke’s breath hitched in her throat. "He... he admitted paternity?"
"He did," Leo said, stopping five feet from her. "Julian Graves is the biological father of your child. But unfortunately for you, Julian also filed an emergency petition for sole physical custody with the family court thirty minutes ago, citing your pending federal indictments and gross parental unfitness."
The world seemed to spin around Brooke. The walls of the hangar tilted violently. She had thought she was the apex predator, playing Dominic against Julian, using a child as an ultimate bargaining chip to guarantee a life of untouchable luxury.
Instead, she had been played by everyone. Dominic had discarded his real family for her lie; Julian had used her to target Sinclair and then discarded her like toxic waste; and Clara Sinclair had simply stood back, letting the law close the net around all of them.
"You have the right to remain silent," an FBI agent said, stepping forward with handcuffs. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law..."
As the cold steel locked around her wrists, Brooke looked at Leo with wide, pleading eyes.
"Tell Clara..." Brooke choked out, tears of terror finally streaming down her face. "Tell Clara I'm sorry. I just wanted... I just wanted security for my baby..."
Leo looked down at her with an expression of icy indifference.
"My sister," Leo said softly, "spent six years building an empire while you spent two years plotting how to steal it. You don't get to invoke motherhood now, Brooke. Not after what you did to Grace."
May you like
They led her toward the waiting government sedan. The rain continued to fall, washing away the last traces of the grand conspiracy that was supposed to crown Dominic Vance king of an empire he never owned.
