Chapter 6 - The Trap at St. Catherine's

Vivian turned and melted into the crowd of socialites before Adrian’s security could close the perimeter without causing a riot.

"Adrian, get me out of here," I whispered, the room spinning around me. The lights of the chandeliers seemed to distort, fracturing into blinding shards of gold and white.

"Daniel! Car. Now," Adrian commanded, his hand clamping around my waist, his broad body shielding me from the dozens of prying eyes and flashing cameras.

We didn't take the main entrance. Daniel led us through the hotel's industrial kitchens, down a labyrinth of stainless-steel prep tables and roaring exhaust fans, bursting out into the damp, freezing air of the service alley where the armored Cadillac was idling.

"What did she say to you?" Adrian demanded the second the heavy armored doors slammed shut, sealing us inside the quiet leather interior. The Cadillac surged forward, tires screeching against the wet cobblestones.

"She said you owned the gray SUV," I said, staring at him in the darkness of the cabin, my chest heaving. "She said you orchestrated O’Hare. She said you led us into a slaughterhouse!"

"She's lying to fracture us, Evelyn!" Adrian shouted, slamming his palm against the leather armrest. "She's playing psychological warfare because Vance is losing his nerve! Marissa traced that SUV—it belongs to a shell logistics fleet registered under Marcus's old accounts!"

"Marcus is dead!"

"Marcus's *money* isn't dead!" Adrian countered, his eyes blazing in the dark. "Vance absorbed Marcus's network after I put my brother in the ground! They are using old Mercer signatures to make you doubt me, because if you run from me, you take the children out of my perimeter, and Vance can snatch them without firing a single shot at my men!"

Before I could answer, the secure dash-mounted radio squawked with static.

*“Boss!”* It was Marissa, her voice jagged with panic. *“We have a secondary breach—not here! Boston!”*

My heart plummeted into my stomach. "Boston? What is in Boston?"

*“The research facility at Harvard,”* Marissa reported, the sound of keyboard clatter audible in the background. *“Dr. Carter’s laboratory. A team of four armed men just broke into the secure archives of her immunology lab. They torched the servers, but they pulled physical hard copies of her private research files!”*

"Why would they want my immunology research?" I cried out, grabbing Adrian’s lapel. "It's clinical data on pediatric auto-immune disorders! It has nothing to do with shipping or cartels!"

Adrian’s face drained of all color. The anger vanished, replaced by an expression of pure, unadulterated horror.

"The twins were premature," Adrian whispered, his voice trembling. "Evelyn... what did you treat them with when they were born?"

I swallowed, the room tilting. "They had a rare surfactant deficiency. Their lungs were collapsing. I... I developed an experimental synthetic peptide. I used my own blood markers and a proprietary synthesizer at St. Catherine's. I had to register the patent through the university's private trust..."

"A patent," Adrian breathed, his eyes wide. "The Mercer family trust has a clause dating back fifty years. Any medical patent developed by an heir or a spouse of an heir using Mercer-funded educational grants automatically becomes the intellectual property of the primary trust corporation."

"I didn't use Mercer money!" I screamed. "I worked three jobs!"

"The fellowship, Evelyn!" Adrian took my face in both of his large hands, his eyes tortured. "The anonymous fellowship that funded your PhD and your lab at Harvard... I funded it! Through my father’s offshore trust! Vance doesn't just want the shipping routes, Evelyn. Your synthetic peptide... the military defense contractor Vance is trying to acquire needs that exact proprietary formula to finalize an eleven-billion-dollar bio-defense contract with the Pentagon!"

The world stopped spinning. It fractured into complete, terrifying clarity.

This wasn't about an old lover. It wasn't about mafia pride.

It was about money. Unimaginable, monstrous amounts of corporate and military wealth. And my babies—my innocent, beautiful children—were the biological keys to the entire empire because their DNA was the living proof of the patent’s clinical efficacy.

"They're going to the penthouse," I whispered, the realization hitting me like a physical blow. "They don't just want the patent data from Boston. They need Ethan and Emma's blood samples to validate the patent under federal law."

"Marissa!" Adrian bellowed into the radio. "Lock down the bunker! Deploy lethal countermeasures on the lower levels! We are five minutes away!"

*“Adrian, they cut the main grid!”* Marissa’s voice was breaking up, laced with gunfire in the background. *“They used a military-grade EMP in the substation across the street! The elevators are dead! We're fighting them on the stairwells!”*

Adrian didn't hesitate. He pulled two spare magazines from under his seat, slapped them into his tactical vest, and looked at Daniel through the rearview mirror.

"Ram the perimeter gates," Adrian ordered coldly. "We're going in through the loading docks."

"Adrian, wait—" I grabbed his arm. "You can't go in there alone!"

He turned to me. In the shadows of the speeding car, he reached behind my neck, pulled my face toward his, and kissed me.

It wasn't the gentle kiss of a memory; it was the ferocious, desperate, possessive kiss of a man who was walking into hell to protect the only two things that had ever given his dark life meaning. His lips were hot, demanding, tasting of scotch and unyielding devotion.

"I spent six years without you, Evelyn," he whispered against my lips, his breath ragged. "I would rather die tonight on those stairs than live another day in a world where you and my children aren't safe. If I don't come out... take Daniel. Take the car. Go to the federal marshals in Virginia. Daniel knows the contact."

"No," I said, my hand gripping his wrist with an iron strength he didn't expect. I looked at the glove compartment, reached forward, and pulled out his secondary backup weapon—a sleek, black Sig Sauer P365. I racked the slide with a clean, mechanical snap that made Daniel’s eyes widen in the mirror.

"You're Dr. Evelyn Carter," Adrian said, stunned, a wild, fierce pride igniting in his gray eyes.

May you like

"I was," I said, my voice cold as absolute zero. "Now, I'm their mother. Let's go get our kids."
