Chapter 3 - The Birth of Leo

The world narrowed to an intense, blinding white focal point.

Pain was no longer a sensation; it was an ocean that roared in my ears, dragging me under with every wave, demanding every shred of breath, every ounce of blood, every prayer I had ever whispered in the dark while lying beside an empty pillow.

"Push, Maddie!" Clare was crying, her hands gripping my left arm, her tears splashing down onto my knuckles. "Push for him, Maddie! He's right there!"

"I can't," I wept, my head thrashing against the soaked hospital pillow. "Clare, I can't... I don't have anything left."

Dr. Chen stepped between my knees, her expression calm, fierce, and commanding. "You have everything left, Maddie. You carried this child alone for nine months. Do not let that man's shadow stay in this room. One more time. Three... two... one... push!"

I screamed—a primal, raw, terrifying sound that tore free from the deepest corner of my chest, purging three years of patronizing lectures, three years of Victoria's insults, three years of watching my husband step over my heart like it was trash on a sidewalk.

And then... a sudden, miraculous release.

The room went completely, reverently quiet.

A tiny, wet, furious wail shattered the silence.

Waaaah! Waaah!

Dr. Chen laughed, holding up a small, squirming, vernix-covered bundle of dark hair and flailing fists. "Look at him, Mama. Eight pounds, two ounces. Perfect lungs."

They laid him directly onto my bare chest.

The warmth was instantaneous. The baby's skin was soft as rose petals, smelling of sweet almond oil and new life. He stopped crying the second his cheek touched my breast, his tiny, perfectly formed fingers curling instinctively around my thumb.

His eyes fluttered open—dark, stormy gray, identical to my father’s.

"Leo," I whispered, tears pouring down my face in an unbroken stream of pure, unadulterated devotion. "Your name is Leo. Leo Bennett."

Clare sobbed openly, burying her face against my shoulder. "He's beautiful, Mads. He has Dad's chin. He doesn't look like them at all. Not even a little bit."

Rebecca stood near the door, her hands folded over her leather briefcase, watching us with a look of profound, quiet triumph. She checked her watch.

"It is three-fourteen on Thursday afternoon," Rebecca announced, her voice soft but laden with legal finality. "The vital statistics coordinator has entered the birth certificate. The father’s name field has been left blank pursuant to the emergency protection order. Under the laws of Illinois, Ethan Vance is not legally recognized as this child's parent until a court orders a genetic verification hearing."

I kissed Leo's damp forehead, inhaling his scent, feeling his steady, tiny heartbeat thumping against my ribs.

"He won't get a hearing, Rebecca," I said quietly, looking up from the bed. "Because by the time Ethan realizes what he lost... we will be long gone."
