Chapter 8 - The Cornered Viper

"Clear the hallway! Move!"
Grant’s voice bellowed through the executive suite with a primal intensity that shattered the stunned silence of the boardroom. He carried me toward the private executive elevator, his face pale with exertion, sweat beading on his brow as his fractured ribs screamed in protest.
"Grant, put me down, you're hurting yourself!" I cried, clutching his lapels as another searing contraction tore through my pelvis. The pain was unlike anything I had ever imagined—a violent, rhythmic crushing that took the air straight out of my lungs.
"I’m not letting go of you, Claire. Not ever again," he panted, his jaw clenched as he kicked the elevator call button.
Marcus was already on his radio. "Lin, we have a code red. Spontaneous rupture of membranes, active labor, thirty-one weeks gestation. Divert the transport unit to Mount Sinai West. We need a level-four neonatal team scrubbed and waiting on Bay Two!"
The elevator dropped forty-five floors in a smooth, sickening descent. When the doors slid open into the private underground loading dock, the scene was pure chaos. Evelyn was being shoved into the back of an unmarked federal cruiser thirty feet away, her screams muffled by the reinforced glass.
Suddenly, the screech of burning rubber echoed through the subterranean garage.
A black delivery van, unmarked and idling near the service ramp, accelerated violently toward the elevator vestibule.
"Look out!" Elias Ward shouted.
Marcus didn't hesitate. He shoved Grant and me back into the reinforced concrete alcove of the elevator bank just as the van smashed into the steel support pillar three feet from where we had been standing. The impact rattled the concrete ceiling, sending dust and debris raining down over us.
The driver’s door of the van flew open. A man scrambled out—not Evelyn's regular security, but a desperate, wild-eyed associate I recognized from the cartel accounts Natalie had exposed on the Cartier micro-drive. He had a weapon raised, eyes darting frantically toward the cruiser where Evelyn was detained.
"Get her inside!" Marcus roared, drawing his weapon and firing two suppressing rounds into the van’s engine block. The sound was deafening in the enclosed concrete space.
Grant shielded my entire body with his own, pressing me against the cold marble wall of the elevator corridor. Another contraction seized me, so violent that my vision blurred with dark spots. I let out a ragged scream, my fingers digging into Grant's shoulders until I felt the fabric of his suit tear.
"I’ve got you, baby," Grant whispered into my ear, his voice trembling, tears streaming freely down his bruised cheeks as he kissed my temple. "Breathe with me, Claire. Look at me. Don't look at them. Look at me."
I forced my eyes open. Through the haze of blinding pain and terror, I saw my husband. Not the cold, polished billionaire of Greenwich, not the man who had terrified me on the nursery cameras, but the man who had knelt beside our daughter’s crib and whispered her name before she had even taken a breath.
Two more gunshots cracked through the garage, followed by the heavy thud of a body hitting concrete and the unmistakable wail of approaching NYPD sirens.
Marcus appeared around the corner, his weapon lowered, holstering it with a swift motion. "Threat neutralized. Medical transport is pulling in right behind us. Move, now!"
Two EMTs rushed through the corridor with a gurney. Within seconds, I was lifted onto the stretcher, an oxygen mask pressed over my face, IV lines being spiked into my veins.
As they wheeled me toward the flashing red lights of the ambulance, Grant ran alongside, holding my left hand in both of his, refusing to let the paramedics push him aside.
"Sir, you need to stay back—" an EMT barked.
"That’s my wife!" Grant roared, his voice cracking with a raw, undeniable authority that brooked no argument. "That’s my daughter! I’m getting in that ambulance or you’ll have to shoot me!"

The EMT took one look at Grant's bloodstained shirt, his bruised face, and the desperate, unyielding fire in his eyes, and stepped aside. "Get in."
