Chapter 5 - The Ambush

The following morning, Eleanor Bennett decided to strike back.

She did not use the courts; she knew Daniel Brooks had blocked her judicial maneuvers. Instead, she used her favorite weapon: institutional corruption.

At 10:30 AM, while Emily was drawing in the sunroom, two unmarked sedans pulled up to the gate of our Annapolis safe house. Daniel Brooks’s private security detail halted them at the perimeter, but within minutes, Daniel received an urgent phone call.

"It's Dr. Laura Gable," Daniel announced, stepping into the living room, his face grim. "Accompanied by two county mental health evaluators and an executive transport van."

I stood up, fear spiking through my veins. "Dr. Gable? That's Eleanor's personal therapist! The one who sits on the hospital board with her!"

"They're carrying an emergency psychiatric evaluation order," Daniel said, looking at Dad. "Signed by Judge Vance before our recusal motion was formally entered into the clerk's computer system. They're claiming Claire is actively suicidal, experiencing hallucinations, and holding her daughter hostage in an unauthorized facility."

Dad didn't blink. He walked to the window, looked out at the gate where the evaluators were arguing with our security guards, and picked up his landline phone.

"Daniel," Dad said smoothly. "Let them in."

"Dad! No!" I cried, grabbing his arm. "They'll drug me! They'll take me to that private clinic in Baltimore! Once they get me inside, they can keep me for seventy-two hours without an attorney!"

"Claire," Dad said, turning to look me directly in the eye. "Look at me."

I stopped, trembling.

"Do you trust me?" he asked.

"Yes," I breathed.

"Then let them walk into this parlor," Dad said. "Because an ambush only works if the target doesn't know it's coming. And right now, Dr. Gable is walking directly into a trap she spent forty-eight hours digging for herself."

Five minutes later, the double doors of the sitting room opened.

Dr. Laura Gable entered first. She was a severe woman in her late fifties, dressed in an expensive camel-hair coat, carrying a leather medical clipboard. Behind her stood two burly men in plain clothes—orderlies from the private psychiatric retreat Eleanor funded—and Richard Sterling, the Bennetts’ attorney.

"Claire," Dr. Gable began, her voice dripping with artificial empathy. "My dear, you don't have to live in fear. We know you’ve been through an immense psychological trauma. The fall... the stress of your marriage... it’s caused a severe dissociative break."

Sterling stepped forward, holding out a court document. "Mr. Brooks, we have a valid emergency order signed by Judge Vance under Maryland Health Code. Claire must be remanded to the St. Jude Private Behavioral Center for a mandatory seventy-two-hour evaluation. If you interfere, it is a felony obstruction of justice."

Daniel Brooks sat on the sofa, calmly sipping coffee. He didn't even look at the paper.

"Dr. Gable," my father said from the shadows near the fireplace.

Dr. Gable turned, frowning slightly. "And who are you, sir? The father? Mr. Hayes, I understand this is painful for you, but your daughter is experiencing acute psychosis. She’s claiming her husband threw her down the stairs—a completely unfounded delusion contradicted by Mark Bennett’s own sworn testimony."

Dad stepped into the daylight. In his hand, he held a thin, red manila folder.

"Dr. Gable," Dad said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Did you personally evaluate my daughter before signing this emergency petition?"

"I have reviewed her psychiatric history and her current clinical state based on reports from her attending physicians—"

"That was not my question," Dad interrupted. "Did you examine Claire Hayes Bennett in person within the last seventy-two hours?"

"Under emergency protocols, a remote evaluation based on family corroboration is permissible—"

"Not under Maryland Courts and Judicial Proceedings Code Section 3-8A," Dad said, opening the folder. "Nor under the American Psychiatric Association’s ethical canon, Section 7. But more importantly, Dr. Gable... did Eleanor Bennett transfer two hundred and fifty thousand dollars to your private research foundation in the Bahamas yesterday afternoon at 4:15 PM?"

The room went dead silent.

Dr. Gable’s jaw dropped. The professional composure melted from her face, leaving her looking hollow, pale, and terrified. "What... what are you talking about?"

"Sarah Lin," Dad said without looking back.

Sarah stepped out from the hallway, holding a stack of certified wire transfer receipts bearing the official seal of the United States Treasury.

"At 4:15 PM yesterday," Sarah recited in a monotone, businesslike voice, "an entity named Apex Horizon LLC—controlled by Eleanor Bennett—wired a quarter of a million dollars to Gable Neuro-Research Ltd., an offshore shell company registered in Nassau. Forty-five minutes later, you submitted an affidavit to Judge Vance swearing under penalty of perjury that Claire Bennett was clinically insane."

Richard Sterling’s hands began to shake. "This is... this is privileged client information—"

"This is a federal wire fraud and bribery indictment," Dad said, taking one step toward Dr. Gable. "Daniel Brooks has already transmitted this package to the United States Attorney for the District of Maryland. Right now, two FBI special agents are waiting outside the front gate to take your statement, Doctor."

Dr. Gable let out a choked gasp, dropping her clipboard onto the hardwood floor with a loud clatter. "Sterling! You told me this was a routine domestic matter! You told me her father was a nobody!"

Sterling turned white as a sheet, backing away toward the door. "I... I was misinformed."

"You weren't misinformed, Richard," Dad said, his voice cutting like a razor. "You were arrogant. You and Eleanor believed that because you belonged to the same country club, the laws of the United States didn't apply to you. Troopers!"

The double doors flew open. Two Maryland State Troopers, accompanied by two federal agents in dark suits, stepped into the room.

"Dr. Laura Gable," the lead agent said, flashing his gold creds. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit honest services wire fraud, perjury, and witness tampering. Richard Sterling, you are served with a grand jury subpoena for all communications between your firm and Bennett Holdings."

As the handcuffs clicked around Dr. Gable’s wrists, she began to sob hysterically. Sterling stood motionless, his career, his reputation, and his freedom unraveling in seconds.

Dad walked over to Sterling, leaning in close so only the lawyer could hear.

"Tell Eleanor that her paper shield is burning," Dad whispered. "And tell Mark that he should pack a bag."
