Chapter 6 - The Mistress’s Confession

We met at 10:30 PM in the sterile, fluorescent-lit back room of an all-night diner off Interstate 77, halfway between Lake Norman and Charlotte. It was a place where nobody cared about bespoke suits, architectural awards, or social pedigree.
Chloe Ruiz looked unraveled.
The polished, smirking woman who had strutted through my dining room twenty-four hours earlier, mentally measuring my lake house for new curtains, was completely gone. She wore an oversized grey hoodie, dark sunglasses she didn't take off despite the dim light, and no makeup. Her manicured nails were bitten to the quick.
When I slid into the vinyl booth across from her, accompanied by Eleanor’s chief of security who stood impassively near the door, Chloe flinched.
"Where is Luca?" I asked directly, placing both hands on the table.
"I don't know," Chloe said, her voice shaking. "He left our uptown condo two hours ago with a duffel bag and a bottle of bourbon. He was screaming that he was going to the corporate office to 'clean the slate' before the federal subpoenas land tomorrow morning."
"You reached out to me, Chloe. Why?"
Chloe let out a ragged, trembling breath. Tears welled in her bloodshot eyes. "Because Julian Sterling told me that if I ever contact him again, he’ll make sure the Cayman authorities charge me with sovereign financial fraud. He promised me, Jessi! When he introduced me to Luca at that gala in Raleigh, Julian told me Luca was a weak man with a brilliant wife, and that if I gave Luca the attention he craved, we could carve out a $20 million design-and-branding division that belonged entirely to us!"
"You didn't care that he was married," I said, keeping my voice flat, devoid of sympathy.
"Nobody cares about marriages at that level!" Chloe shot back bitterly, before shrinking under my cold gaze. "I... I wanted what you had. Okay? I looked at you. You had the lake house, the respect, the architectural genius, the money. Luca told me you were cold. He told me you treated him like an employee. He said you hadn't shared a bed in two years!"
"Luca lied to you to justify his inadequacy, Chloe. And you were foolish enough to believe him because your greed was bigger than your common sense."
Chloe swallowed hard, reaching into her bag with trembling fingers. She pulled out an encrypted Samsung rugged drive and a sealed manila envelope, sliding them across the formica table.
"What is this?" I asked.
"Everything," she whispered. "Luca’s personal voice memos from the last fourteen months. He recorded his meetings with Julian Sterling because he didn't trust Julian either. Julian laid out the entire scheme: how to funnel the South End escrow into Aura Living, how to frame you as erratic and emotionally unstable to trigger the board’s emergency incapacity clause, and how Julian’s mezzanine fund would sweep in and buy the company once the bank called the default."
I picked up the drive. The weight of it in my palm felt like the final brick in an execution wall.
"Why are you giving this to me?" I asked.
"Because the Cayman entity has my signature on it," Chloe cried softly, her voice breaking. "Julian structured it so if the FBI looked into it, the money trail ended at my sister’s doorstep. Luca is broke, Jessi! His personal accounts are overdrawn by $800,000 from margin calls on tech stocks he bought six months ago. He doesn't have the money to save me. He doesn't have the money to save himself."
I looked at her—this woman who had stood in my living room, mocking my marriage, claiming there was nothing left for me.
"You will go to Eleanor Shaw’s legal team at 8:00 AM tomorrow," I said, my voice quiet, firm, and merciless. "You will surrender this evidence under a sworn, videotaped affidavit. If you do that, Eleanor’s litigators will negotiate a limited non-prosecution recommendation with the U.S. Attorney’s office for your cooperation in exposing Julian Sterling’s bank fraud."
Chloe nodded frantically, tears streaming down her hollow cheeks. "And the money? The Cayman funds?"
May you like
"Every single dollar goes back to Vance Capital’s workers, subcontractors, and pension funds," I said, leaning forward until she could see the absolute resolve in my eyes. "You don't walk away with a fortune, Chloe. You walk away with your freedom and a prison record avoided. That is the only deal you will ever get from me."
