Chapter 5 - An Audit of Betrayal

By Friday morning, Vance Global’s headquarters felt like an occupied territory.

A forensic accounting team from one of the Big Four firms, hired directly through Julian Cross, took over the entire thirty-ninth floor. Flynn had been escorted from the building by security after attempting to delete files from his personal server at midnight. Selina had been served with an immediate termination notice and a court summons freezing her bank accounts pending the recovery of misappropriated corporate funds.

I spent eighteen hours a day in my father’s old corner office, surrounded by stacks of financial records, bank statements, and vendor contracts.

Every page I turned revealed another layer of betrayal that went far beyond infidelity.

Flynn hadn't just cheated on me; he had systematically embezzled from the company to fund a lavish double life while keeping Clara and me under financial lockdown.

"Look at this, Mabel," Julian said, laying out a series of wire transfers on the desk before me. "He created a shell consulting company registered in Delaware called 'Aegis Strategies.' Over the past twenty-four months, Vance Global paid Aegis over eight hundred thousand dollars for 'strategic HR consulting.'"

"And who owns Aegis?" I asked, though I already knew the answer.

"Selina Harris's younger brother," Julian replied grimly. "The money was funneled directly into a trust that purchased a four-bedroom luxury townhouse in Miami, two sports cars, and paid off Selina’s personal student loans. All while he told you the company was too cash-poor to replace the water heater in your family home."

I closed my eyes, taking a slow, deep breath to steady the violent anger threatening to choke me. I remembered boiling pots of water on our kitchen stove last winter so Clara could take a warm bath, while Flynn claimed we had to wait until the spring quarter bonus to spend two thousand dollars on a new plumbing system.

He hadn't been conserving cash for the family. He had been starving us to feed an insatiable ego, buying the loyalty and adoration of a woman who flattered his narcissism.

The door to the office opened, and Marcus Thorne walked in, looking grim.

"Mabel," Marcus said, sitting down across from me. "The board has reviewed the preliminary forensic findings. It’s worse than we thought. The SEC has initiated an informal inquiry into the Delaware shell entity. If this becomes a criminal indictment, the Vance Global brand is dead. Our institutional investors will pull their capital, and we could face Chapter 11 bankruptcy."

"Not if we act decisively, Marcus," I said, sliding a newly drafted operational plan toward him. "We don't hide the rot. We expose it ourselves. We file the criminal complaint against Flynn and Aegis Strategies before the SEC forces our hand. We rebrand the logistics wing under the Bennett name, restore investor confidence by demonstrating transparent governance, and replace Flynn with an interim executive committee."

Marcus looked at the proposal, his eyes widening as he read through the meticulous restructuring model I had drafted overnight.

"You did this in twelve hours?" he asked, astonished.

"I spent five years analyzing global financial portfolios before Flynn convinced me my place was in the kitchen," I said coldly. "I haven't forgotten how to save an enterprise. But I need Flynn completely excised from the corporate registry. He loses his voting rights under the bad-faith clause of the founder’s agreement."

Marcus nodded slowly. "Flynn won't go quietly, Mabel. He’s cornered. And a cornered man with his pride on the line will burn the house down just to keep warm."

"Let him try," I said. "I'm not the scared girl who accepted his eighteen-hundred-dollar allowance anymore."
