Chapter 12 - The Patriarch's Shadow

Alexander Vance, the founding titan of the Vance empire, stepped over the threshold of the penthouse with slow, deliberate steps.

For seven years, high society had believed Alexander was bedridden in a private sanitarium in Switzerland, incapacitated by dementia while his daughter-in-law Eleanor and grandson Julian ran the dynasty. Yet here he stood—frail of body, but with eyes as sharp and cold as glacier ice.

"Get off the floor, Julian," Alexander said, his voice a low, raspy rumble that carried the authority of fifty years of corporate dominance. "You look like a mongrel."

Marcus slowly removed his knee from Julian’s chest, stepping back toward me while keeping a protective posture between the old man and Arthur. Two police officers immediately moved in, hauling Julian up and securing his hands in steel cuffs. Julian didn't fight them. He was shaking, his eyes wide with horror as he stared at the patriarch he thought he had buried alive.

"Grandfather... they lied to you," Julian whispered frantically. "Clara—she set us up! She's trying to destroy the family!"

Alexander stopped two feet from Julian. He slowly raised his silver cane and pressed the cold metal tip directly against Julian’s chest.

"I did not spend fifty years building this name so that a coward could drag it through criminal courts," Alexander said coldly. "I gave your mother control because she promised she would groom an heir worthy of the Vance legacy. Instead, she raised an embezzler, a gambler, and a monster who divorces his pregnant wife on a hospital bed."

"Grandfather, please—"

"Take him away," Alexander ordered the police officers, without even looking at Julian again. "Tell the precinct captain that Alexander Vance will personally sign the complaint for trespassing, attempted assault, and violation of the protective order."

The officers dragged Julian out into the corridor. Julian’s frantic pleas echoed down the hall until the elevator doors closed, cutting off his pathetic wails once and for all.

The penthouse grew quiet again, save for the faint whimper of Arthur in my arms.

Alexander Vance slowly turned around. His gaze moved from the shattered glass on the floor to Marcus, and finally, rested upon me and the bundle against my chest.

"You are Clara," Alexander said. It was not a question.

"I am," I replied, standing straight, refusing to cower before the legendary patriarch. "And this is Arthur."

The old man’s expression softened, a flicker of genuine humanity breaking through his stern facade. He leaned heavily on his cane, walking slowly toward us. Marcus tensed, but I raised a gentle hand, signaling that it was all right.

Alexander stopped in front of me and looked down at Arthur’s tiny face. Arthur blinked his wide, clear eyes up at the old man, completely oblivious to the empire that hung in the balance.

"He has my brother's eyes," Alexander murmured softly. "The true Vance bloodline was never in Julian’s greed, Clara. It was in the honor we forgot to keep."

"Why are you here, Mr. Vance?" I asked, my voice steady. "Julian said Eleanor was transferring the Zurich trust."

"Eleanor attempted to," Chloe spoke up, stepping forward with a leather briefcase. "What Eleanor didn't know was that three days ago, our forensic team traced the original trust indenture to a private clinic in Zurich. Marcus contacted Mr. Alexander Vance directly. He wasn't incapacitated, Clara. Eleanor had spent the last four years paying the Swiss doctors to keep him sedated and isolated so she could control his proxy votes."

I stared at Marcus in shock. Marcus met my gaze with a calm, reassuring nod. "I couldn't tell you until we had him safely on American soil, Clara. If Eleanor found out he was awake, she would have eliminated him."

Alexander looked back at me, his jaw set like iron. "Tomorrow night is the annual Vance Foundation Centennial Gala. Eleanor used her remaining influence to ensure the event would still take place, hoping to convince the board and the international creditors that she still commands the dynasty."

The old man reached inside his tailored overcoat and pulled out a heavy, wax-sealed parchment bearing the golden crest of the Vance Family Trust.

"Tomorrow night, Eleanor will unveil her new board," Alexander said, placing the document into my hands. "And you, Clara, will walk through those doors as the sole trustee and executor of the entire Vance estate. Arthur is the only legal heir left to this family. You will strip Eleanor of every title she holds, before the eyes of the entire world."
