Chapter 5 - The Ambush on Grant Street

The elevator ride to the forty-second floor felt suspended outside of time. The silence in the cab was absolute, punctuated only by the soft, rhythmic hum of the high-speed cables and the quiet breathing of my newborn daughter.

When the doors parted, the executive floor of Sterling, Vance & Montgomery was hushed in its usual atmosphere of expensive mahogany, discreet wealth, and high-stakes law. Several junior associates carrying legal binders froze in their tracks as I stepped out, flanked by Evelyn and the two process servers in dark suits.

Through the frosted glass walls of the primary boardroom down the hall, I could already see silhouettes. Adam was standing at the head of the long conference table, gesturing animatedly with his hands, his posture radiating that smooth, practiced arrogance I had mistaken for confidence for five long years. Seated across from him were the three senior managing partners, including Richard Sterling, whose silver hair and stern profile were unmistakable.

“Wait here,” Evelyn murmured to the process servers. “Wait until Clara gives the signal.”

I walked toward the frosted doors, my heels clicking sharp and decisive against the polished hardwood borders. With my left hand holding Nell’s carrier and my right resting lightly on the brass handle, I didn't knock. I shoved the double doors wide open.

The heavy doors swung inward with a resounding crash against the stops.

Every head in the room snapped in my direction.

Adam’s sentence died mid-throat. “—and as you can see from the forwarded emails, Julianna’s erratic behavior culminated in— *Clara?!*”

His face turned an instantaneous, chalky gray. The smug, condescending smile that usually adorned his lips vanished, replaced by an expression of sheer, unadulterated panic. He was holding a leather-bound presentation folder, his custom tailored Italian jacket buttoned impeccably, the silver cufflinks I had given him on our wedding day gleaming under the recessed spotlights.

“What in God’s name are you doing here?” Adam stammered, his eyes darting wildly between me, the baby carrier, and Evelyn standing immediately behind my shoulder. “You’re supposed to be in bed! Richard, I apologize—my wife has suffered severe postpartum psychosis since the birth. She’s completely unstable, she shouldn't even be driving—”

“Shut your mouth, Adam,” Richard Sterling barked, his voice vibrating with the command of a federal judge.

Richard didn't look at Adam. He stood up slowly from his high-backed leather chair, his piercing gray eyes fixed on me and the tiny bundle resting against my arm. The old man’s face softened for a fraction of a second with profound sorrow before hardening into stone.

“Clara, my dear,” Richard said gently. “Please, take a seat.”

“She doesn't belong in this meeting!” Adam shouted, his voice cracking with sudden hysteria. He lunged around the mahogany table toward me, reaching out as if to physically steer me out the door. “This is an internal personnel dispute! Clara, get out of here right now with Nell! How dare you bring my daughter into this environment!”

Before Adam could lay a finger on my coat, one of Evelyn’s process servers stepped smoothly between us, his broad chest blocking Adam’s path like a brick wall.

“Back up, Mr. Vance,” the man warned in a low, gravelly tone.

“Do not come near me, Adam,” I said, my voice so chillingly steady that Adam froze in his tracks. “And do not ever speak of your daughter again as if you remember what she looks like. You haven't seen her in twenty days. The last time you saw her, she was choking on amniotic fluid in the NICU while you were ordering room service champagne at the Peninsula in Chicago.”

Gasps rippled around the table. The other two managing partners, Harold Vance (Adam’s second cousin) and Marcus Montgomery, exchanged horrified glances.

“That’s a lie!” Adam hissed, sweat now glistening visibly on his forehead. “Richard, she’s hallucinating! Julianna Vance fabricated this entire narrative to blackmail me, and she’s poisoned Clara’s mind! I have the emails right here proving Julianna’s misconduct!”

May you like

“Then you won't mind explaining these,” Evelyn said calmly, stepping forward and dropping three heavy, spiral-bound dossiers directly onto the center of the mahogany table with a thunderous thud.
