Chapter 4 - The Truth Unravels

Tristan took a heavy step into the study, tracking muddy water across the antique Persian rug. The rain beat down furiously through the open doorway behind him, spraying mist across the bookshelves.

“Put that iron down, Tristan,” I said, stepping between him and where Serena was cowering on the floor.

My voice was dead level. I didn't shake. I didn't back up. For eight years, I had bent myself backward to accommodate his ego, his temper, his sudden mood swings, always believing that a good wife absorbed the blows so the marriage could stand. But looking at him now—mud-spattered, hollow-eyed, holding a weapon against women and a child—the last remaining shred of my affection evaporated into thin air.

“Get out of my way, Claire,” Tristan hissed, his teeth bare. “This doesn't concern you. This lying wh*re stole my phone and ran into my house to poison my family against me!”

“Your house?” Margaret’s voice cut through the air like a whip.

She slammed the telephone receiver onto the desk and stepped beside me, standing shoulder to shoulder with me. She was barely five-foot-three, but in that moment, she seemed ten feet tall.

“You don't own a single splinter of wood in this house, Tristan,” Margaret said. “You don't own the rug you’re ruining with your filthy shoes. You don't own the child sleeping peacefully in the guest room. And you certainly don't own Claire.”

“She’s my wife!” he yelled, slamming the tire iron down against the edge of the mahogany desk. The wood splintered with a sickening crack. “She owes me her loyalty! I gave her a life! I worked myself half to death in Rotterdam while she sat here spending my money!”

“*Your* money?” I barked out, stepping directly into his personal space, completely fearless. “Do you want me to print out the bank records, Tristan? Do you want me to show the police the four hundred thousand euros wired to *Vance & Laurent Holdings* in Luxembourg? Do you want to talk about Julian Vance and the three-million-euro bribe you took to cover up an industrial crime?”

Tristan’s face went from crimson rage to an ash-gray pallor in less than a second.

The tire iron slipped slightly in his grip. The arrogant sneer that had defined his mouth since he walked through the door this afternoon melted into sheer, unadulterated panic.

“What... what did she tell you?” he stammered, his eyes darting wildly toward Serena, who was weeping behind the desk.

“She told us everything,” I said, taking another step forward, forcing him to back up toward the open rain. “She told us how you sold your integrity to your cousin. How you took another man’s child to use as leverage. How you planned to discard me with fifty thousand dollars while you sat on millions in offshore accounts.”

“Claire, she’s lying!” Tristan scrambled, his voice pitching high, cracking with desperation. “She’s crazy! She has postpartum psychosis! Julian Vance is an innocent man! Serena was sleeping with half the engineering crew in Rotterdam! She doesn't even know who Leo’s father is! She made up the story about the money to protect herself!”

“Is that so?” Margaret said smoothly, picking up her cell phone from the desk.

She turned the screen toward him.

The screen displayed an active call. The speaker was on. And a deep, resonant voice with a heavy European accent was already speaking through the line.

*“Tristan? Tristan, are you there?”* the voice asked in crisp, refined English.

Tristan’s jaw went slack. “Julian?”

*“I’m deeply disappointed in you, cousin,”* Julian Vance said from the speaker of Margaret’s phone. *“Margaret called my private line ten minutes ago while your young lady was explaining your little arrangement. Did you really think you could threaten Serena, hold her child hostage, and leave me out of the loop? Did you forget who controls the access codes to the Luxembourg holding account?”*

“Julian, wait—listen to me!” Tristan pleaded, dropping the tire iron completely. It clattered against the hardwood floor with a heavy, hollow thud. “She ran away with the kid! She broke the contract!”

*“There is no contract, Tristan,”* Julian’s voice replied, ice-cold and utterly devoid of mercy. *“There was an understanding that you would take care of them and stay quiet. Instead, you flew to America, caused a domestic catastrophe, and tried to defraud your own mother and wife. The Dutch police have already reopened the investigation into the site collapse based on internal emails I turned over to the prosecutor’s office this afternoon.”*

Tristan’s knees buckled. “You... you turned over the emails? You confessed?”

*“I reached a plea agreement two hours ago,”* Julian said calmly. *“I will pay a fine and serve community supervision. But you, my dear Tristan... you accepted an undocumented bribe, falsified corporate safety certifications, and committed tax evasion across three international jurisdictions. The federal authorities in your country have already been notified. If I were you, I wouldn't worry about divorcing your wife. I would worry about finding a very good defense lawyer.”*

The line went dead.

May you like

A dead, suffocating silence descended over the room. The only sound was the heavy downpour outside, washing away the mud on Tristan’s expensive shoes.
