Chapter 4 - The Viral Counterstrike

By ten o’clock that evening, the internet had caught up with the wreckage of Brierwood.
It started with a seven-minute video posted to TikTok and Instagram Reels from Sienna’s personal account.
I was sitting in my living room, watching the rain beat against the floor-to-ceiling windows of my loft, while Julian reviewed corporate bylaws at the counter. My phone buzzed with an alert from my PR director at Vanguard Grid: *“Clare, do not respond to this. Let legal handle it.”*
I opened the link.
Sienna Vance was sitting in what looked like the back of Ethan’s car. Her makeup was artfully smudged beneath her lower lashes, her hazel eyes glistening with raw, theatrical sorrow. She was wearing an oversized cream sweater—one of Ethan’s—and clutching a white tissue.
*"I never wanted to make this public,"* Sienna began, her voice quivering with that breathy, vulnerable cadence that had earned her two hundred thousand followers as a lifestyle micro-influencer. *"I believe in grace. I believe in forgiveness. But the lies being spread about Ethan and his family today are more than I can bear."*
She took a shaky breath, dabbing delicately at her cheekbone.
*"What happened at Brierwood today wasn't a betrayal. It was an escape. For three years, Ethan has been trapped in a deeply toxic, controlling, and emotionally abusive relationship with Clare Montgomery. Clare used her wealth to isolate him, to dictate his business decisions, to make him feel like he was nothing more than an accessory to her corporate brand."*
A tear spilled down her cheek, perfectly timed.
*"Last night, Ethan reached his breaking point. He realized he could not walk down the aisle with a woman who held his career hostage. He called the wedding off. He came to me, his oldest friend, shattered. When Vivian and the Whitmore family saw his pain, they made the courageous choice to surround him with love. The ceremony today was a symbolic union of healing—a private commitment between two people who realized they had loved each other in silence while trying to protect a monster."*
She choked back a sob.
*"Clare stormed the property like a madwoman. She destroyed private family heirlooms. She threatened an elderly woman. She pulled my hair. She used her corporate lawyers to lock the venue gates, leaving elderly grandparents and young children stranded without water in the heat. Ethan’s startup accounts have been illegally frozen. We are terrified. We are speaking to the police. Please pray for us."*

The comments were already flying by at fifty per second.
*“Omg I always knew Clare was fake! Look at her eyes in her Forbes interview, total sociopath!”*
*“Suing a bride on her wedding day? Psycho behavior.”*
*“Ethan dodged a tactical nuke. Sienna is an angel for standing by him.”*
*“Cancel Vanguard Grid! Boycott their software!”*
My hands didn't shake this time. They went completely numb.
"Julian," I said calmly.
Julian didn't look up from his phone; he was already watching the video. His jaw was set so hard that a vein pulsed along the side of his temple.
"She’s playing the court of public opinion," Julian said, his voice flat. "She knows the corporate fraud suit will take six months to reach discovery. By then, she thinks she can destroy Vanguard’s valuation, force your board to demand a quiet settlement, and extract a seven-figure severance for Ethan to 'go away quietly.'"
"She thinks I'm going to hide," I said.
"They're counting on it. High-profile women in tech usually settle. The PR consultants always tell them to issue a bland statement expressing regret and wait for the news cycle to turn."
I stood up from the sofa.
"Julian, do you have the digital records from the Brierwood security system?"
"I do," he replied. "Henderson surrendered the local drive the moment I threatened him with a spoliation of evidence subpoena."
"And do you have the audio recording from the bridal suite at the hotel?"
Julian paused, his dark eyes narrowing. "What audio recording?"
"The hotel dressing room had a high-end smart mirror system installed last month," I said, walking toward my desk. "The front desk manager gave me the access credentials when I booked the bridal floor. It records automated time-lapse videos and ambient audio for promotional reels—with client consent."
Julian slowly closed his laptop. A razor-sharp, terrifying smile broke across his face.
"Clare," he said softly. "You terrifying, beautiful genius."
"Download the footage from 5:12 AM," I said, typing my credentials into my personal tablet. "The camera is positioned directly above the vanity. It captures the entire dressing room, the brass garment rack, and the door."
Julian’s fingers flew across his keyboard. Within thirty seconds, the video buffer cleared.
The high-definition, wide-angle footage opened on my empty hotel dressing room. The sound was crystal clear: the muffled rush of the shower running in the adjoining bathroom where I had been washing my hair.
At 5:14 AM, the dressing room door clicked open.
Ethan Whitmore walked in. He was wearing an unbuttoned dress shirt.
Two seconds later, Sienna Vance slipped into the room behind him. She was laughing. She didn't look like a woman comforting a broken man. She looked predatory.
*"Hurry up,"* Ethan whispered on the recording, glancing toward the closed bathroom door. *"If she comes out, this whole thing goes sideways."*
*"Relax,"* Sienna whispered back, wrapping her arms around his neck and kissing his throat. *"She takes twenty minutes to blow-dry her hair. Look at this dress, Ethan. It’s gorgeous. It’s going to look ten times better on me than it ever would on her flat chest."*
Ethan chuckled, his hands sliding down to her waist. *"Vivian already told the rector. Once you're down the aisle, there's nothing she can do. The press release goes to the Richmond Times-Dispatch at nine sharp. We call her the unstable ex-fiancée, we take the social credit, and we use the trust funds to settle Vanguard’s buyout."*
*"Did you get the veil?"* Sienna asked, running her fingers over the antique lace on the brass rack.
*"It’s right there,"* Ethan said. *"Take it. Vivian said the press needs the family heirloom narrative for the heritage committee."*
*"She’s going to lose her mind,"* Sienna giggled, unzipping the garment bag. *"She actually thought you loved her, Ethan. It’s almost sad."*
*"I loved her money,"* Ethan replied casually, walking over to the vanity and pocketing my bespoke perfume bottle. *"Now grab the bag. The car is downstairs."*
The video ended with the two of them dragging my wedding dress through the door, laughing into their sleeves.
I looked at Julian.
"Julian," I said. "How long does it take to compress an MP4 file?"
"Ten seconds," Julian said, his eyes glittering like crushed coal.
"Don't give it to a PR firm," I said, my voice ice. "Upload the raw file directly to my personal Twitter, my LinkedIn, and Vanguard Grid’s corporate investor portal. Tag the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the Charlottesville District Attorney, Dominion National Bank, and every member of the Virginia Heritage Preservation Board."
"With what caption?" Julian asked.
I looked at the screen where Sienna's tear-streaked face was still begging for sympathy.
"Just three words," I said.
