Chapter 11 - The Auction of Arrogance

By the following week, the full weight of the legal system crashed down upon Richard and Eleanor Sterling.
Acting on the documentation uncovered by Arthur Pendelton and Sheriff Vance, federal marshals tracked Richard down at a cheap motel near the Canadian border, attempting to flee with two duffel bags containing two hundred thousand dollars in undeclared bearer bonds. He was arrested on charges of federal tax evasion, wire fraud, and grand larceny.
Because Richard and Eleanor had used forged documents to secure loans against Donald's estate, the county bankruptcy court ordered an expedited liquidation of every luxury asset tied to their names to satisfy state liens.
Grandma Ruth, Ellis, and I drove into the city to attend the private asset audit at the county courthouse.
The hallway was packed with reporters, creditors, and former socialite friends who had turned out solely to watch the spectacle of the Sterling downfall.
Sitting at the defense table was Bridget. She was stripped of her designer gowns, forced to wear an ill-fitting gray sweater provided by the detention center. Her makeup was gone, her roots showing dark brown against her bleached blonde hair. Beside her sat Richard, dressed in an orange jumpsuit, his wrists shackled to his waist belt.
When Bridget saw me enter the courtroom, her eyes flared with unhinged fury.
"You!" she screamed, lunging across the table before two bailiffs forced her back into her chair. "You stole my life, Esther! Look at me! I am Bridget Sterling! I'm supposed to be married at the St. Regis! I'm supposed to have a house in the Hamptons! You belong in the dirt, not me!"
The presiding judge slammed his gavel down with a deafening crack. "One more outburst from the defendant and she will be removed to holding!"
Arthur Pendelton rose from our table, holding a thick ledger. "Your Honor, on behalf of the Donald Sterling Estate and Esther Sterling, we submit the certified forensic accounting. The Sterling enterprise is bankrupt. Every luxury vehicle, including the leased Mercedes used by Bridget Sterling, all jewelry purchased with embezzled funds, and the suburban estate must be surrendered for public auction immediately."
The judge reviewed the papers and nodded without hesitation. "Motion granted. The Sterling trust remains entirely in the possession of Esther Sterling. Bail is denied for Richard Sterling due to flight risk. Bridget Sterling will remain remanded without bail pending grand jury indictment for criminal forgery and conspiracy."
As the bailiffs stood Richard up to lead him through the holding cell doors, he turned toward me. His face was gray, his shoulders slumped in utter ruin.
"Esther..." he whispered, his dry lips trembling. "Tell them... tell them I’m your father. Tell them to give me house arrest."
I held Ellis’s hand tightly, feeling the strength of the ring on my finger.

"You stopped being my father the moment you decided my life was something you could sell," I said, my voice echoing across the silent courtroom.
Richard lowered his head, tears of self-pity streaming down his hollow cheeks, and allowed the guards to drag him away into the shadows.
