Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Mercer Dynasty

General Marcus Mercer broke.
Seeing his legacy, his pride, and his decades of untouchable supremacy disintegrate in front of twenty rolling cameras, the animal inside him took over.
He didn't care about the cameras. He didn't care about the press.
With a roar of blind, unhinged fury, Marcus lunged across the stage directly at my throat.
“I’LL KILL YOU!” he screamed.
He never reached me.
Nathan moved like a coiled spring. He stepped inside Marcus’s swing, caught the retired General’s extended arm, twisted his body, and executed a brutal, text-book military hip throw.
Marcus flew through the air, crashing violently onto the wooden platform of the stage with a thud that echoed through the microphones.
Before Marcus could roll over, Nathan drove his knee hard into the small of the General’s back, pinning him to the floor, grabbing his wrist, and snapping a pair of heavy steel handcuffs onto his arms.
*Click. Click.*
“Marcus Mercer,” Nathan said in a cold, steady voice that echoed across the plaza. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit treason, obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and felony assault.”
“Get off me!” Marcus thrash-kicked like a wild beast, his face pressed against the floorboards. “Do you know who I am?! I built this state! I built the military! You are nothing! You’re all nothing!”
Four federal agents in tactical gear sprinted onto the stage, weapons drawn, taking control of the perimeter.
Two female agents approached Eleanor Mercer.
Eleanor backed away, her hands clawing at her face, tears ruining her expensive mascara. “Don't touch me! I’m Eleanor Mercer! You have no right!”
“Eleanor Mercer,” the agent said, grabbing her wrists with practiced efficiency and clicking cuffs onto her wrists. “You are under arrest for wire fraud, bribery of public officials, and federal witness intimidation.”
She looked at me as they dragged her past. Her cold, untouchable majesty was completely destroyed.
“Claire...” she sobbed, her voice trembling like a child lost in the dark. “Claire, tell them... tell them it’s a mistake... Claire, I’m your mother!”
I looked at her.
I remembered the thirty years of cold dinners.
I remembered the empty chairs at my graduations.
I remembered her laughter as my knees hit the marble floor.
“You were never my mother, Eleanor,” I said softly. “You were just Marcus’s accomplice.”
She began to wail, a shrill, humiliating sound that was captured by every camera as she was escorted down the capitol steps toward a waiting federal transport van.
Beside the podium, Austin remained curled in a ball on the floor, stripped of his dignity, waiting for the military police to take him away. The medals on his chest—the medals I had earned for him with my lies—gleamed uselessly in the sun.
I stood at the edge of the stage, watching the empire crumble.
Reporters rushed the base of the riser, fifty microphones thrust toward my face, dozens of voices shouting simultaneously:
*“Miss Mercer! How long have you known?!”*
*“Miss Mercer, what will happen to Sentinel Global?!”*
*“Claire! Claire, look here!”*
I looked down at the sea of flashing lights. I took a deep, steady breath—the first breath of truly clean air I had taken in thirty-one years.
I leaned down into the center microphone.

“My name is Claire Mercer,” I said, my voice echoing clear across the entire capital city. “And the truth doesn't belong to the powerful anymore.”
