Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Summons

At seven-fifteen the next morning, the executive elevator at Hawthorne Ridge Tower chimed softly.
Vanessa stepped out into the marble rotunda, clutching a designer leather portfolio. She had slept less than three hours, but her makeup was flawless, her forest-green power suit sharp enough to cut glass.
Behind her strode Grant, looking somewhat disheveled despite his tailor-made Brioni suit. He was tapping frantically on his smartphone.
"I don't like this, Vanessa," Grant hissed under his breath. "Why change the venue two hours before signing? Hawthorne Ridge has operated through intermediaries for six months. Why does this mysterious 'Chairman Vance' suddenly want an in-person meeting?"
"Because when you're writing a two-billion-dollar check, Grant, you call the shots," Vanessa replied tersely, though her own heart was hammering against her ribs.
Cole Dynamics was fifty-four hours away from missing a catastrophic municipal bond payment. If this deal didn't close today, the banks would freeze their operational accounts by Friday. Everything she had sacrificed—her marriage, her health, her peace of mind—depended on the signature of a man she had never seen.
"Just let me handle the talking," Grant muttered, tucking his phone away. "These reclusive billionaire types usually have massive egos. I'll massage his pride, we get the pen on paper, and the funds clear by noon."
"Good morning, Ms. Cole. Mr. Mercer."
Maya Chen emerged from the double frosted-glass doors of the main boardroom. Her face was as carved from granite.
"Ms. Chen," Vanessa said, extending a hand. "Thank you for accommodating us. We're eager to finalize the partnership."
Maya shook her hand professionally, completely ignoring Grant’s outstretched palm. Grant’s jaw clenched, but he swallowed the slight.
"The Chairman is waiting inside," Maya said, stepping aside and holding the door open. "He reviewed the final forensic audit overnight. He has several points he wishes to clarify before the wire transfer is authorized."
Vanessa felt a knot form in the pit of her stomach. "Points? The term sheet was agreed upon last Friday."
"The Chairman reserves final discretion on all capital deployment exceeding one billion," Maya stated calmly. "Please, step inside."
Vanessa drew a deep breath, adjusted the lapels of her jacket, and walked into the grand conference room.
The room was vast, dominated by a monolithic black granite table that overlooked the Delaware River. At the far end of the room, a high-backed executive leather chair was turned toward the window, looking out over the morning fog lifting from the water.
"Good morning, Mr. Vance," Vanessa said, pitching her voice with the practiced authority that had won her tech conferences across the country. "I want to thank you personally for Hawthorne Ridge’s faith in our vision. Advanced energy storage is not just our business; it is the infrastructure of the next century."
The chair did not move.
Grant took a step forward, his voice boisterous. "Yes, Mr. Vance, we appreciate your time. We have our legal team on standby via secure video link. We can wrap the administrative formalities in twenty minutes and let you get back to your day."
The man in the chair raised a single hand. A quiet, measured gesture.
Grant fell silent.
Slowly, smoothly, the heavy leather chair rotated toward them.
Vanessa’s voice died in her throat. The color drained from her skin so rapidly that she took an involuntary step backward, her heel catching on the carpet.
Sitting behind the granite desk, dressed in an immaculate, bespoke charcoal three-piece suit with a silk slate tie, was the man she had splashed with cheap red wine ten hours earlier.
May you like
"Ethan?" she whispered, her voice cracking like dry wood.
