Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House of Thomas

The aftermath of Sunday morning was not a wave; it was a tsunami.

By Monday afternoon, Grace Citadel’s social media pages were flooded with hundreds of thousands of comments demanding Bishop Thomas’s resignation. The hashtag #StreetRatToBillionaire trended worldwide, with clips of the Buckhead security footage gaining over eighty million views on Facebook and TikTok within twenty-four hours.

In the corporate world, the collapse was even swifter.

Pierce Capital’s sudden withdrawal triggered an immediate liquidity audit at Brad’s investment firm. It took forensic accountants less than forty-eight hours to discover what Brad had been hiding behind his flashy suits and rented sports cars: he had been using church building funds as collateral for high-risk speculative margin accounts, skimming management fees to fund his Buckhead lifestyle.

I sat in my new corner office on the forty-second floor of the Pierce Industries headquarters, watching the news ticker at the bottom of the screen.

*BREAKING: Federal prosecutors open investigation into Grace Citadel leadership. Investment banker Brad Mitchell suspended pending fraud inquiry.*

A soft knock came at my office door.

"Come in," I said.

The door swung open, and Malik ran across the plush carpet, holding a drawing of three figures standing under a bright yellow sun. He wore clean denim overalls and a striped shirt, his dark curls bouncing with energy.

"Look, Zuri!" he beamed, slamming the paper onto my glass desk. "I made Daddy have bigger ears."

I laughed out loud, pulling him into a hug. "Oh, he's definitely going to complain about that. You gave him elephant ears, Malik!"

Elijah walked in behind him, carrying two coffees, a faint, genuine smile softening the sharp planes of his face. He looked relaxed—a man who had carried the world on his shoulders for years and was finally finding a moment to breathe.

"I heard that," Elijah said, setting a vanilla latte in front of me. "For the record, my ears are perfectly proportional."

"The artist disagrees," I smiled, ruffling Malik’s hair.

Malik giggled, grabbing a box of crayons from my side table and scurrying over to the leather sofa to continue his masterpiece.

Elijah leaned against the edge of my desk, his eyes resting on me with warmth that made my skin tingle. "You've been working too hard. Marcus told me you were here until eight last night reviewing the youth shelter grants."

"I have half a billion dollars to put into real hands, Elijah," I replied, leaning back in my chair. "I’m not going to waste a single penny. We’ve already approved funding for four emergency safehouses for runaway and displaced kids in the metropolitan area. No child should ever have to sleep behind a dumpster."

"You're incredible, you know that?" Elijah murmured, his voice dropping into an intimate register. "Most people would have used this platform to settle personal scores. You used it to build a sanctuary."

"The truth settled the score for me," I said quietly. "I didn't have to lift a finger."

Before Elijah could respond, the intercom on my desk buzzed.

"Ms. Thomas?" my executive assistant’s voice came through the speaker. "There is a woman in the main lobby demanding to see you. Security stopped her at the elevators, but she’s causing a scene. She claims to be your sister, Dr. Khloe Mitchell."

I looked at Elijah.

His jaw tightened, the warm father instantly replaced by the ruthless CEO. "I’ll have Marcus remove her."

"No," I said, standing up and smoothing my skirt. "Let her up. I think it’s time Khloe and I had our final conversation."

Five minutes later, Khloe was escorted into my office by two stone-faced security guards.

She looked unrecognizable. The immaculate, smug golden child from the dining room table was gone. Her hair was pulled back in a messy knot, her designer trench coat was wrinkled, and her eyes were bloodshot from crying.

"Zuri," she choked out, rushing toward the desk before the guards blocked her path. "Zuri, you have to stop this! You have to talk to Elijah!"

"Step back, Khloe," I said evenly.

Khloe looked around the massive, sun-drenched office, her eyes wide with shock and envy, before landing on Malik, who had quietly moved to stand behind Elijah’s legs.

"Brad was arrested this morning," Khloe sobbed, her voice cracking. "The FBI raided our house in Buckhead! They seized our cars! They froze my private clinic’s accounts because Brad listed my practice as a corporate guarantor! I’m going to lose my medical license, Zuri! We have nothing!"

I looked at my sister, feeling no triumph, no gloating—only a profound, hollow pity.

"You had everything, Khloe," I said softly. "You had a medical degree. You had parents who adored you. You had every door opened for you since the day you were born."

"Then why are you doing this to us?!" she screamed.

"I didn't do this to you. Brad did. Dad did. And you stood by, laughing while they kicked a freezing child into the street because you were worried about your country club reputation."

"We made a mistake!" Khloe fell to her knees on the Persian rug, weeping uncontrollably. "We didn't know who he was! If we knew he was Elijah Pierce’s son, we would have treated him like a prince!"

Elijah stepped forward, his voice cutting through her hysterics like an ice pick.

May you like

"That," Elijah said coldly, "is precisely why you deserve everything that is happening to you."
