Chapter 5 - The Net Tightens

The gravel crunched beneath his knee as the silence stretched between us.

Grant Hale, the man who had commanded rooms of international financiers with a single glance, was kneeling in the dirt on a deserted Maine bluff, weeping silently with his head bowed.

I looked down at him, my heart tearing in two. The fury that had kept me upright for weeks suddenly felt like brittle glass, cracking under the weight of his grief. Yet, the instinct to protect the life inside me kept my feet firmly rooted to the ground.

"Get up, Grant," I whispered, wiping the cold tears from my cheeks.

He slowly lifted his head. His eyes were bloodshot, his face pale and lined with exhaustion. "Clara... just let me explain. You don't have to forgive me. You don't ever have to come back to New York. But let me protect you from what my father is about to do."

"What is he going to do?"

Grant rose to his feet, swaying slightly as if the weight of the last twenty-four hours was finally catching up to his body. "When I discovered the forged protocol on the server last night, I confronted Richard at the Meridian offices. We had a physical altercation. I took the security logs, the digital audit trails, and the forged authorization forms directly to the board of directors."

He stepped closer, his voice dropping into an urgent, low cadence.

"The board voted 7 to 2 to suspend Richard’s executive privileges pending an independent forensic audit. But my father isn't a man who accepts defeat gracefully. He still controls the family foundation’s offshore legal trusts. When he realized I was coming for him, he activated Thomas Vance to intercept you before I could reach you. He knew that if he had physical custody of you and the baby, he could force me to step down and sign over full control of Hale Meridian to his proxy."

A shudder ran through my body. The cold wind off the water suddenly felt freezing.

"He wanted to use our baby as corporate collateral," I said, the horror settling deep into my bones.

"Yes," Grant said, his jaw tightening with renewed fury. "And that's why you can't stay in this cottage. Vance failed, but my father has other resources. He has private security teams, corrupt private investigators, and offshore legal teams who operate outside domestic jurisdictions. Silverthorne isn't safe anymore."

"And where is safe, Grant?" I asked bitterly. "Hawthorne House? Your penthouse in Manhattan? The Hale estate in Greenwich? Everywhere you exist is surrounded by your father’s reach!"

"Not everywhere," Grant said quietly. He reached out, his hand hovering inches from mine, hesitating, waiting for my permission. When I didn't pull away, his warm, calloused fingers gently brushed against the back of my hand. The simple touch sent a jolt of heat straight to my heart. "There is a place my grandfather built before Hale Meridian went public. An island off the coast of New Brunswick. It’s registered under a private maritime trust that Richard has never had access to. It has its own power, satellite communications, and a private medical team that answers only to me."

I pulled my hand back, crossing my arms over my chest. "And what am I to you there, Grant? A prisoner in a gilded cage? A ward of your private security?"

"You are Clara," he said, his voice breaking with an intensity that took my breath away. "The woman I fell in love with while watching you defend your father’s legacy against a room full of predators. The woman whose bed I was terrified to leave in July because I knew that if I stayed, my father would use you to break me. And the mother of my child."

The word hung in the air: *Love.*

In two years of arranged marriage, through countless formal dinners, through quiet mornings sharing coffee in the library of Hawthorne House, and even through the breathless darkness of that July night, he had never said that word.

"You never told me," I whispered.

"Because I was a coward," Grant said, his eyes burning into mine. "I thought if I kept my distance, my father would see you only as an asset, not a vulnerability. I thought if I pretended our marriage was just business, he would leave you alone. I spent two years trying to protect you by starving you of the affection you deserved, and in the end, my silence almost cost me everything that mattered."

Before I could answer, a high-pitched electronic chime echoed from Grant’s field jacket.

He pulled out a secure satellite phone. The screen flashed with an urgent red notification. Grant tapped the speaker.

"Julian, what is it?"

"Grant, you need to move," Julian Vance’s voice cut through with frantic urgency. "Your father just retained an emergency federal magistrate in Boston. Marcus Sterling filed an ex parte petition claiming Clara is an international flight risk holding proprietary Hale intellectual property. They've issued an administrative travel freeze and dispatched a private maritime enforcement team from Portland. They're tracking your vehicle’s transponder."

Grant’s face darkened with absolute, lethal resolve. "How long do we have?"

May you like

"Twenty minutes," Julian said. "Maybe fifteen. Get out of there, Grant. Now."
