Chapter 4 - The Unmasking

Vanessa’s sobbing filled the cavernous library, but there was no pity in the room. Even her mother, Janice, had stepped back toward the wall, looking at her daughter with a mixture of horror and fury. The golden ticket that was supposed to secure their family for four generations had just dissolved into ash.

"Tell me," Julian repeated, his voice dropping into a guttural growl. "Who touched you while you were working in my office? Who touched you while you were telling me you loved me?"

"Julian, please don't do this here..." she wept, clutching his knees.

"Answer him, Vanessa," I said from the sofa. I hadn't moved. My four children were still quiet, Noah and Ethan watching from the threshold under Brigitte’s protective arms. "Because if you don't tell him, Eleanor is going to read the attachment from the Miami clinic’s bank records."

Vanessa’s head snapped toward me, her eyes wide with frantic terror. "You... you didn't..."

"Did you really think I spent two years in Switzerland just making chocolate and walking in the mountains?" I asked, tilting my head. "When you take twelve million dollars from Arthur Whitmore, you use it. You hire the best forensic accountants in Zurich. You track every wire transfer. You track every offshore account."

Eleanor Vance adjusted her glasses and pulled a crisp financial ledger from her briefcase.

"In October of the year Mrs. Evelyn Whitmore left," Eleanor read aloud, "a wire transfer of four hundred and fifty thousand dollars was sent from an LLC registered in Delaware under the name *Apex Horizons* to the private account of Dr. Emilio Santos in Coral Gables. The same doctor who certified the fraudulent prenatal paternity test. And the beneficial owner of Apex Horizons..."

Eleanor looked up, her gaze sweeping past Arthur and settling directly on Harrison Vance—Arthur’s own chief legal counsel.

Harrison went dead pale.

"No," Julian whispered, turning his head slowly toward the man who had managed the Whitmore family empire for fifteen years. "No."

"Not Harrison," Eleanor said smoothly, a grim smile touching her lips. "His nephew. Carter Vance."

Arthur let out a choking roar. "Carter?!"

Carter Vance. Julian’s chief rival. The former Vice President of Whitmore Capital whom Julian had ousted three years ago for insider trading. Carter had vowed to ruin Julian, but nobody had realized the depth of his vengeance.

"Carter set you up, Julian," I said, my voice steady and unforgiving. "He couldn't beat you in the boardroom, so he targeted the weakest link in your orbit: your ambitious, starstruck executive assistant. Vanessa didn't just have an affair with Carter. She was sleeping with him until the week she told you she was pregnant. When the triplets were confirmed, Carter financed the doctor’s silence and the falsified papers. The plan was brilliant, really."

I stood up, smoothing the front of my ivory pantsuit.

"Carter knew Arthur’s obsession with a male heir. He knew Julian’s guilt would force him to do the 'honorable' thing and leave me. And once Vanessa was married to Julian and the triplets were irrevocably embedded in the Whitmore irrevocable trust, Carter would hold the ultimate blackmail card over Whitmore Enterprises for the rest of your lives."

"You whore!" Arthur lunged forward, his cane raised high, his face purple with apopleptic fury.

Julian intercepted his father with a single, brutal movement. He caught the old man’s arm in midair, his grip like iron.

"Don't you dare touch her," Julian snarled, his voice vibrating with rage. "You created this, Father! You! With your obsession with your precious name! With your threats to disinherit me if I didn't produce an heir! She gave you exactly what you demanded, and you were so arrogant you didn't even check to see if the gold was painted lead!"

Arthur gasped, clutching his chest with his free hand. His cane clattered to the floor. "Julian... my heart..."

"Call an ambulance for him," Julian told the security guards without looking down at his father. "And take her."

Julian looked at Vanessa. There was no rage left in his eyes now—only a vast, hollow disgust that was far more lethal.

"Take her out of my house," Julian said. "Take her mother. Take her things. If she is on Whitmore property when the sun goes down, have the marshals arrest her for corporate fraud, criminal conspiracy, and grand larceny."

"Julian! No! What about the boys?" Vanessa screamed as two state marshals hoisted her to her feet by her arms, dragging her across the rug. "They love you! You're the only father they know!"

"They are Carter Vance’s sons," Julian said, his back turned to her. "Send the child support bill to Delaware."

Vanessa’s screams echoed down the long marble corridor until the heavy exterior doors slammed shut, cutting off the noise like a guillotine.

The library was silent again.

Harrison Vance was frantically dialing emergency services for Arthur, who was slumped in an armchair, clutching his chest and wheezing.

In the center of the room stood Julian. He looked completely shattered, a hollow shell of the triumphant billionaire who had walked toward the altar an hour ago.

He slowly turned around and looked at me. Then he looked at the four toddlers standing near the garden doors.

"Evelyn," he whispered, his knees trembling as if they could no longer support the weight of his guilt. "What have I done?"

"You reaped what you sowed, Julian," I replied softly.

I turned to Brigitte. "Bring the children. Our car is waiting."

"Evelyn, wait! Please!" Julian lunged forward, falling to his knees right at the threshold, his hands grasping for the hem of my jacket. "Don't take them! Don't leave me! Please... I'm begging you. On my knees, Evelyn. I will give you everything. I will sign the entire company over to you. Just let me hold them. Let me be their father!"

I looked down at the man I had once loved with every fiber of my being.

"You had your chance to be their father, Julian," I said. "Two years ago, in that penthouse. Now, you’re just a man with a DNA match."

May you like

I stepped around his outstretched hands, took Noah and Grace by the fingers, and walked out into the afternoon sun.
